I would do tone-on-tone much like it is, with a variant of the stone color on the body of the house.

The starting point for color has to be the stone, especially because there's so much of it. The green I see on the siding in the middle picture isn't flattering. Find one of a similar value with the same undertone as the stone to create unified look. I'd put an accent color on the trim, darker than the body color, and a third color on the front door that you don't use anywhere else to create a focal point. Choose the front door color last, and make sure it doesn't clash with flowering trees and shrubs.

Sterling Property Services: could you elaborate on your comment about the middle photo? For the green siding, are you referring to the color of paint covering the majority of the siding in the right 1/3 of the photo? And judging just from these photos, how would you describe the undertone of the stone?

Also, I like your suggestion of using a different color for the front door. We also have a couple of back doors (photo below shows one) that are full glass and that we were also thinking about painting a different color. Should the color of those doors relate to the front door, other than the need to make sure each one fits with the rock and siding around it?

As we drove around looking at other properties, one house that we liked is shown in the photo below. After thinking about what makes this exterior work so well to us, we decided that this look probably wouldn't transfer well to our property for several reasons. Does anyone have any additional thoughts for our property after looking at this inspiration photo?

1. Yes, I was referring to the siding color in the middle photo.

2. Difficult to tell from the pictures, but I think I see a pink undertone, which is intensified by the green paint, the complement to red. If that's true, choose a neutral with a similar undertone to minimize the look of pink. Avoid yellow beiges and yellow greens, and avoid whites and pastels. Try warm grays or taupes.

3. The back door color should be different from the front door color which should be unique.

4. Your inspiration house is all about sections instead of a cohesive whole, and the front door isn't much of a focal point. There are a lot of ideas and lots of contrast. Be sure that's the look you want.

On my monitor, your stone--or mortar, at least--has a pink undertone. I'd do two shades of gray, and go wild on the front door.

No green or blue.
