What do you think is the deal with the industrial toilets? Is that typical of estates of the time? I love stuff like this but it does seem more "asylum" and less "grand manse." Of course keep them but...any way to make the bathrooms less...creepy?

The architect, Clarence R. Hope, was a commercial architect and he did a lot of work for DuPont so when Mr. Coyne commissioned the house I am sure one or the other or the builder (healey and sons I think I need to check my notes) was like, forget these normal toilets, let's go with top of the line modern commercial style toilets. The servants areas have normal toilets.

I have never seen commercial toilets in a residential house of this vintage and I have probably seen 100 of them.

I should add that Kohler did market the the rockbourne commercial toilet for residences in the late 20s as I have an advertisement.

BTW 4.5 gallons per flush on the Sloan valves. You can still get them easy enough.

Mount and frame your toilet ad in the bathroom. It needs some signs of life.

I don't have an original, just a scan from the Internet. And the scan shows the sink, tub, and toilet in pinkish tan. I like the tile so I don't want to hang anything on it and since the tile goes up 7ft or do anything above it does not make sense (there is some tasteful but not period correct wallpaper up there now). I don't feel like it is missing anything other than a better towel set.

No don't wreck that awesome tile, the photos just make the room look cold. It's fine, the room speaks for itself, I guess. Just can't help thinking, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, or something.

The movie seems appropriate for the house and its occupants, especially the cat.

just a thought to mull over.....remember one very important thing.....this house was specifically built for it's OWNERS.....never mind the "time period" it was BUILT in, it was the OWNERS that would have decided what to go with, depending on THEIR tastes, and what was available at the time....perhaps the "look" and construction of the commercial toilets was what appealed to the homeowner, as it conveys a "forward thinking" and "cutting edge technology" in it's very style....I'm thinking it was a matter of individual taste as to what went in there...looks like they were trying to achieve a "clean landscape" as opposed to having a bathroom filled with all sorts of doo-dads......much easier to keep clean, too !! If you care to warm it up visually, though, may I suggest the addition of a tiny, tall table ( about 30-36" high and 12" square ) or a half-round table, placed to the right of the toilet ( if you were standing in front of it looking at it ) upon which you could place that bathroom ad in a standing frame, along with a couple of hand towels ( one overlapping the other )..... or a small green plant, thereby making the space feel a little more "homey" and less "industrial"....just a thought...

And if you LIKE the idea of a "halt-round table" but cannot find what you are looking for, figure out the width you need....then keep your eyes open for a FULL round table...it can be cut in half, thereby giving you TWO tables to use wherever you choose....and there are special adhesives to use to adhere the back to the tiles WITHOUT doing any damage to the tiles ( they're gorgeous! )......Good luck!!

I'm dying right now, lol. Please consider at least a rug? The tile is gorgeous but the bare floor to ceiling expanse suggests sinister intent. I mean you could just install a drain in the floor...that might be the perfect finishing touch. *chills*
