Exciting Things Underway

Last weekend it was in the 70s here. Yesterday morning, when I woke up, there was snow on the ground. It's all so very depressing, with spring coming along in fits and starts. But the gardens are starting to gear up in spite of the cold. Here are a few things just getting started in my gardens.

Fritillaria meleagris, just added to my garden for this first time this past fall. They're fun! Behind that, you can just see my Campanula poscharskyana poking up, gearing up for the season.

They don't look like much right at this moment, but the European Ginger is getting started, and, as it's one of my favorite plants in the garden, I thought I'd share it's ugly beginnings :)

Finally, one of the 3 Clematis that I purchased at the end of the season for $2.00 each. Even though I don't know what variety it is, it's the best $2.00 I spent last summer! Hoping to cover up that chain link, and this looks promising.

Wow! A $2 clematis! Whatever color it is, it will be great! That looks really vigorous for such a young plant. I'd like to see the ginger later. I keep hearing about it, but have never seen a mature plant.

I love Snake's Head fritillaries too. They are stunning. Here's a picture I took of them in the wild here. They are rare now but this is what they look like when they're happy in a damp meadow beside the River Thames.

I also love a bargain Clematis. I rescued this one from the half dead, give away price shelf at the garden centre last year. It's C alpina 'Constance'.

the fritillaria.. is one of the very few things in nature.. that present an almost perfect square ... the white dots .. and that has always amazed me ...

if you mull on it.. most things in nature are flowing.. or curved.. or round ...

one of very favorite spring flowers...

they actually grow from fallen seed.. here in MI ... IF YOU CAN FIGURE OUT HOW NOT TO PULL OUT THE SMALL BABES NEXT SPRING.. THAT LOOK EXACTLY LIKE GRASS ...

Kirsten you are ahead of other 5a zones like me. Big fan of all 3 plants. So nice to see them coming up for you.

I know I have never been able to pass that Fritillaria without a close inspection of the pattern.
