Cedar mulch in bags should be okay stored in your garage for 2 to 3 months. I have kept a bag of cedar mulch for a year with no problem that I have seen.

Excellent news! Now to fit as many bags as I can in my car and make multiple trips...or just rent a pickup for an hour. I guess time for me to finally measure everything and find out exactly how much I need.

After you stack them, make a few slits along the sides, like a dashed line rather than cutting the whole side of the bag. This will let any excess moisture slowly escape and prevent mold from growing. It probably wouldn't hurt anything but there's no reason to let it sit there wet in a sealed bag either.

If you need a whole pickup load, consider having a load delivered, or bring your own truck and buy a scoop from a landscape place. It might be even cheaper than the bags. But not as easy to store, I guess.

The closest bulk place to me only has cedar in bags at a higher price (although probably higher quality). The next closest one is far enough that renting a truck for them would be more of an ordeal. Sadly not too many places right near me for bulk cedar. And the delivery prices all are high enough to make them higher than bagged. Now if they didn't measure closely and gave extra it would be worth it, but I don't know about these specific places.

This is when I wish I had a friend or relative in the area with a truck. Sadly none do.

The bagged mulch product retaining moisture is a non-issue. If it does and you start to see mold, it is harmless and will not adversely affect the mulch or any nearby plants when the mulch is applied. It's just part of a natural process of decomposition. Even algae growth - which is not mold - is harmless.

Bagged mulch can be kept indefinitely. There is no expiration date :-)

Good to know. I didn't know if it would affect the insect repelling qualities of the cedar or not. Mostly only care about that for termites (haven't ever had any, but seeing that as a listed benefit is a plus). The fact that isn't a high priority for me though I guess means I shouldn't really care if it is affected or not.

Peter did you check Menards? There is cheaper stuff out there if you don't have your heart set on cedar. Also some of the villages have free wood chips if you can pick them up yourself.
