Yes, mushrooms are fruiting bodies of the fungus in the soil. Without soil macrobiota there would be no life on this planet.

Unless growing in your houseplants' potting soil, ANY mushroom found growing indoors is a sign of some sort of problem, usually associated with a leak/moisture and rot. And yeah, that's bad!!!

Indeed, mushrooms grow on decaying organic matter. Having them coming out of your ceiling is not a good sign, IMO.

And I do see what appears to be some decay on that door frame, but the hyphae of mushrooms can spread underground, and may have simply emerged where it found an opening in the concrete, tho it does appear that there is some decay there.

That's why a ceiling might be more of a worry - unless it's a basement?

to be clear.. the ceiling is not really the issue.. the real issue is whether rotting wood is holding up the roof ... or how long it will hold up the roof ...

someone needs to go up in the attic and find out ... and hope they dont fall thru the ceiling ...

id probably plan on moving in the near future ... since it seems that you are a renter.. since you reported it to a manager ...

Jocelyn, the mushroom itself is harmless unless you accidentally eat it AND it happens to be toxic. But it is a symptom of a long-term leak and all of the negative repercussions that can occur from that, ranging from mold/mildew, pests, to structural compromise. None of that is OK.

Your complaint needs to be in writing. I would send it with signature required so you have evidence that it was received and when it was received. Look up the landlord/tenant laws in your area. There may also be free legal services available.
