Increasing curb appeal

The exterior of my home is quite plain and i would like to increase the curb appeal without breaking the bank. My husband has made some battenboard shutters
for me and I need to decide what color to paint or stain them.What color shutters would you suggest for a cream colored house with taupe trim and garage door? I am considering painting the trim and door either white or cream. My roof is multi-toned sort of a greyish brown. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
