Another where to line up cabinets tile and counter top question ...

This is the *rough* look of one of my non-pantry walls. I can adjust sizes but only in some degrees so I can keep the same size squares up top. I'm going to *try* to finesse the math so that the spacing around the window is equal. This is more math than I've done in years ... ha.

To the left is a white framed sliding glass door. I need all the space in that wall so I'm thinking counter top finishes right at that edge. Let it overhang one inch on that edge, and line up top and bottom cabinets and tile all along that one inch indent. I could take top cab all the way to edge, but I think having cabinets touching the door molding would look odd. Same with the tile. (I know some prefer having the tile stay end where the counter top ends).

Opinions? I might be able to stretch the indent to 1.5 inches if I have to. One inch does seem too small maybe.

We had the same dilemma - our bedroom door is right next to our peninsula. We chose to take the backsplash to the end of the counter, and honestly, I feel we should have stopped it at the cabinet and have that strip of wall show. Really, it's not a huge deal, and it doesn't bother me...it's just one of the few decisions I would change if I could.

Also .. sink .. bumpout or not. It is a massive single apron-front stainless sink that will be undermounted so it has the size to carry it off.

I think you did the right thing, texaspenny. You had a natural stopping place with the door frame.

Kimberly, your end cabs look good, but that little extra tile that sticks out beyond the upper cabinet always draws my eye right to it. Well, it's at eye level so maybe that's not a big surprise! But it looks like a mistake to me. It's far less noticeable for the counter to have a few untiled inches.

can you use extra wide molding around the door, which you cut narrower when it's next to the base cabinets? That might buy you enough inches so that the backsplash could continue to the door frame w/o looking too off from the uppers.

I guess I don't like the idea of the molding touching ... it is cramped but I think that would look too cramped to me. Plus I don't want to mess with the molding, since it might lead me down the path of messing with all of it around the door, lol. Texaspenny, I agree with what you did, having the backsplash and counter top flow together made total sense for your application.

Trying to remind myself that no matter what I do with that inch of tile or where the cabinets line up ...

it'll be much better than this with the fridge, stove and dishwasher all opening into the same space, not enough space to stand by sink and dw, the edge of the range on a walkway (I have kids!), etc. Not having room for more than one person in the kitchen is a huge issue too. The dw doesn't empty into the disposal leading to food debris back up ... as well as tons of other tiny issues I hope we can get taken care of. This was the kitchen prior to our move-in as well ... now it is in worse shape from me taking my frustrations out on it, sometimes with hammers or sharp objects.

If this look ever goes 'retro' I'll laugh my behind off.
