Built-In Cabinet Too Small for TV

Just bought a new house! The living room has beautiful built-ins, but it can only fit a 40 inch TV. Any ideas on how we can get this space to hold a larger TV? There are no other walls in the room that we could mount it due to numerous windows. Thank you for your advice!

The below pictures are of the previous homeowners belongings.

Get a 40" TV and move this one to the master or dedicated TV/movie room or man cave.

There isn't a room in the house that can fit a larger TV? No FP in this room? Can we see the whole room?

These are the only other photos I have from the inspection. There is a very small wall a TV might fit, but it might be hard to see the TV if we have the windows open. Other than that, there are just windows everywhere. I'd love to somehow configure the built-in to accommodate something larger if that's even possible. All the other rooms are bedrooms. No other living space.

Looks like the only wall where you won't get glare on the TV is the one between the windows. Hopefully those shades are cordless and blackout and go with the sale of the house. Lower them for bright days.

You could tear them out and have another set built that would fit your TV or just dry wall the spot and fix the floor. You could check with a cabinet maker and see if everything from the drawers up could be removed. Then you could hang you TV higher and have floating shelves on the sides.

it would be very easy to take that built-in unit and reconstruct it into a different configuration.

How large of a TV do you have?

50 inch. We've been wanting an even larger TV, but that won't happen with this current setup :).

If TV is the focus of your lifestyle and you want an even larger one, eliminate the cabinetry and fill the wall with the biggest one it will take.

HI -- You have three choices -- hang the TV between the windows ...or.. hang the TV on the front of the built- in instead of in it ... or ... alter the built - in by removing the center part and the shelves done by a good carpenter/cabinet maker . Call a kitchen /bath shop for a quote. Totally worth the money spent I think.

My husband and I work til 6 everyday and then normally come home, have a glass of wine and catch up on our shows. So the TV is a big part of our lives. My concern with putting the TV on the wall between the windows would be furniture placement. We have a love seat and sofa. One of the couches would need to be free standing (not against a wall). And connected to this room is the kitchen. So having a floating couch would mess up the flow and openness of the room. Here is what is connected to the living room (see photo). Basically the living and eat-in kitchen is all one big room.

Remove everything except the built in drawers and mount the TV on the wall. Then add floating shelves on either side of your larger TV. You will have to patch and paint that wall.

Guy here: rebuild the wall of built ins. Won't cost that much. Will look correct. Get a smaller TV???!???! That's crazy talk. Make sure when you redo them you leave room to go bigger in the future.

What did you end up doing?

I’m in the same boat, larger tv must go where built-ins are and center is too small. Would you mind sharing what you ended up doing and please please share a photo of the change. Thank you.
