I would lean towards a darker gray instead of the blue.

Was your DH opposed to the white trim and the blue door, or just one of the two? If so, which one? Also, what color are you shingles? It's hard to tell in the photo. Lovely home and surroundings, by the way.
With age, the cedar will gray, unless you plan on staining it often, so I don't see a gray door working in the long run. A forest green would look nice as it's a complementary color to red on the color wheel.

Yes, green would be nice too. I wish tibbrix would work her magic, I still think a rich charcoal gray would be pretty especially with the reds in the wood. See how the gray in the brick chimminey and the lighter gray bricks in the front contrast with it? Unless she wants to go bright so the color will pop, but I don't think that is what her DH has in mind.

The program wouldn't work with that photo, lukki, or the color of the door. would work on the garage doors.

With cedar siding and cranberry red trim, I think BM Mountain Moss would be great on the door (and garage door? I'd paint that as well).

I wasn't sold on the red quite yet... so started browsing for new color choices and we're thinking now about green trim and blue door? What do you think?

I don't have any suggestions for color, but that green looks like pea soup. Don't love that red/green combo.

i like the rustic feel it has. Very nice! Now it doesn't have so much red in the wood.

Hm, I think I'd prefer a greener green, like the darkest grass or bush. Not feeling that light olive.

Or maybe even something like this if you want lighter.

Some of the brown stained houses around here have aqua/blue gray/green gray accents. I think that color range looks great with brown, the green to blue range that is. Here's an aqua door.

I usually think black or dark gray trim looks great with cedar, but your siding is on the darker side, and I don't think it would work with your white windows.

I think I'd do the window trim, and maybe the railings, white, and do the front door in a bright primary color.

You said this is natural cedar, but I'm confused. Natural cedar should be gray with no stain, yellow with a clear coat, and orangey with cedar stain. Does yours have a brown stain? Just wondering if there are any undertones to consider.

With such thin trim, I think it looks best unpainted.

It was stained with a cedar stain many many years ago before we bought it, but the front is in direct sunlight all day and doesn't look as orangey anymore... in the back under the eaves it's still pretty orange. We have no plans of doing anything to the siding for now.

I've been wondering about the thin trim too... I wish it weren't so thin! If we left it unpainted, and just painted the door a green or blue, what about the porch railing?
It is in terrible shape, and really needs to be painted (along with the whole back deck, which is huge), we are having a bee problem and they swarm the house to chew the wood off the porch/deck so we need to paint it or something soon...

My house is also red cedar (has lasted over 100 years!) with the barn red trim. Wish my windows, therefore, were black trim. I really don't like the white trim with the red cedar.

Can you change all the white out to a beige?

I think I would look at the colors in the brick fireplace as a source for color options since it would tie that in more with the whole house. I am not a fan of the red anywhere, like the lighter colors on the trim.

I like the thin trim on your house. It's a clean, contemporary look. Wider trim is more of a country look, and is so over used now that it's starting to look perfunctory. I like your trim unpainted. Your house has clean lines & nice proportions.

To tell you the absolute truth? I like it best the way it looks in the original photo you shared. Door color and not trim painted.
I'd look for a opaque stain to match either the house or door color for what has to be painted. It's a beautiful home.

I like the green in Tibb's second picture above, and would like to see that, darkened just a tad, with the same color woodwork and garage door.

The white windows are very distracting and detract from the pleasing natural appearance of the home. If nothing else I would paint the frames.
