it would be very easy to tell you to gut the place and start over.

the cabinets are dated. you will want to reface or replace them. does the current layout work for you? is there anything missing from the kitchen that you want?

I agree with the gutting, however this will have to be gradual. Layout is probably my biggest problem at the moment as the stove has no range/vent of any kind. I am considering moving the stove to position of the fridge. Where to place fridge? What to do with ceiling? What colors for cabinets if refinished or switched out? As for budget...I'm just trying to gather ideas at this time

Can we see the rest of the room - the left side. Can you give us the size of the room...perhaps drawing a picture that shows where doors openings and windows are and their sizes too. I am seeing very well made cabinets and a wonderfully large space but no work area. I am also seeing a husband that's not very happy.

Yes the stove needs to go on the wall. From the limited view and no size perspective I would venture to say...

Fridge at the end of the run right next to the door it is near - then a small counter to place things - then the stove. Sink where it is now.

Run the kitchen in a "U" Making it an attached peninsula where the island is. Relocating the dishwasher to the peninsula closest to the sink. Giving the peninsula enough of an overhang for stools on the far side.

On the far side creating a storage wall that will extend to the same distance as the fridge in a straight line. Remove the single top cabinets to the left and right of the pantry door. Using those 2 cabinets and the taller cabinets on the island stack them to the left of the door with the hats 2 x 2. With enough space in between to equal the height of the other cabinets.

This will give you drop space on both sides of the stove and for the fridge. It will also allow you about 8 more feet of useable counter space that you do not have now on the peninsula.

There are two physical disadvantages. You will need to walk a distance to get a forgotten item from the pantry and when loading the dishwasher you will need to move slightly. As far as expenses, you will need to move the gas line and either get extension hoses for the dishwasher or have a plumber set new valves. Of course you will need a new counter and a stove vent hood.

The upside is you can reuse all your cabinets.

I estimate the counter to cost ~ $ 700.00 in Formica installed.

This is the layout I'm suggesting.

A full pantry wall is great for storing lesser used kitchen items not to mention cleaning products, tools and electronics.

What's behind the louvered doors between the cabinets? That looks like a great location for the fridge - next to the sink for easy prep of food items. Maybe you should replace the stove with one that has a down draft vent. If you put in new countertops, you could extend that raised one left of the stove to add another layer of eating space. Cabs look in good condition. What about painting them and adding some bling with hardware and a nice backsplash?
