Good Sunday Morning!

Creeser, where did you go yesterday? Did you see the sunburst mirror I posted for you?

MP, can you help this Houzzer? https://www.houzz.com/discussions/concrete-countertop-sealer-dsvw-vd~302281

Here is another "beat the dead horse" thing. As we were chatting before, some very good advice given, but ignored, or should I say, not acknowledged. This thread would drive me nuts if I were trying to be recognized for suggesting a possible solution.

Why do you think some dilemmas get headlines and others (worthy) do not? There are many requests for help that are important to the poster and our response would mean so much. Do you ever look at the "new"? Most go unanswered.

creeser, I agree about the perfume! Same thing happened to us at the DMV, and the frangrance was Tigress!! How old is that?

MM, sorry about your Packers, I really am.

astraea, How weird that your heat isn't panning out! Maybe you should write to Chris Christie if anyone could do anything about it, it would be him :))

    olldcan, Oilers? Are you sure?

roo, super glad you finally had a quiet night! How's the tummy? And you don't have to understand football, all you have to do is say your a 49er fan, ok?

ez, you can't see our ideabooks because we've hidden them, due to all of our "fans" and their narsty comments!

Judy, I think the Pats and the Niners may meet.....prepare thyself....

Dang! That was a lot of comments!
judyg: If I can provide an answer, I answer the "new", that are 21 hours or older...
    judy, that dilemma is insane!
@astrea. When I look you up, I get all of your Ideabook photos including the comments you wrote for each one. You did not click on the "make comment private box" when you wrote your notes.

So, OLLDs, how do I get my IDEABOOKS hidden?

I can't even delete my own comments within 24 hours, because so much is hidden from MY view, and I can't find the little tab to click.
Eztia - I think that I'd already saved some of the photos before I realized about the comments being public, but newer ones shouldn't have those comments. I'd much rather be able to copy the photos to my own computer, but they come out in teensy format, and are useless.

Bobbi - Another cool, damp day .. NOT pleasant. They promised us "near 60", and it was "nowhere near"!

Related question - with this weather, whats a good, environmentally friendly way of cleaning moss off my paver driveway? (LOL)
    Vinegar and a push broom?

ez, I'll look that up for you!
ez, go to Your Houzz, Your Houzz (again), Edit Profile, Advanced Settings, My Profile Page. Then select/deselect what you want!
Bobbi - will that keep the moss from growing back (I imagine not, unfortunately). I wonder if there's some coating that will last on pavers & not encourage the growth of moss.
astraea, maybe a marine varnish? The kind they put on the bottom of boats? I don't think you'll get any more moss, but you might get barnacles!!! Just kidding about the barnacles.
Okey dokey, OLLDS, (not something we say in Boston). Pats won, 49er's won. Onward toward Super Bowl. Next Sunday, bobbi and I start placing bets. (Do you think Emily would mind?) Before any of you make a decision, please keep in mind that the NFL (Patriots) gives C P a pension. (No pressure…..:>)

mp, do you want to put up the HGTV house? roo, want to bet the next door neighbor's pool with the porcupine? mm, a snowshoeing trip with a Margarita when I get there ? astraea, a night with racoons in New Jersey? crees, a truck filled with treasures and side mirrors, feeny, where ever you are, an A on my exam, eztia, you research my family history, olldj22, your Chanel coco mademoiselle?

(roo, can, lisa, you do not care about the NFL and who wins)

Did I miss anyone? I am on a role….bobbi, good luck hehehehehehehehe
  • 13 years ago
@astrea. I looked on my Internet browser for ways to remove moss from pavers. Try this site. The person who writes it is from Ireland. Interesting local vocabulary!

alstraea--I'm laughing at you trying to get rid of your moss. Send it here! We are constantly trying to encourage our puffy moss to grow between the sandstones in our front and back walkways. I even have a formula where you put a bit of existing moss in the blender with yogurt, froth it up, and pour it between the cracks to spread out the new growth.

oldj22, come on…bet (on the Patriots and don't listen to bobbi who is rooting for the 49er's) You don't need to know anything about football. You just need to keep chanting: GO, PATS, GO PATS, GO PATS!

This is our attic lift: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200375806_200375806?cm_mmc=Google-pla-_-Storage%20%2B%20Organizers-_-Garage%20%2B%20Attic%20Storage%20Systems-_-567686&ci_sku=567686&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw={keyword}&gclid=CLvZv-be57QCFQ45nAod0hwAMw
You could put it in a walk-in closet ceiling, but we stuck it in the ceiling of the hall at the back door as that was the only place we had room. Instead of trying to blend the bottom of it into the ceiling, we put deocrative wood and stained it and framed it out. Amazing how people tend to ignore it more done like this than they would if we had tried to blend and it never quite disappeared.

eztia, I don't have any photos because I never saved any to my ideabook. I pin mine on Pinterest. Go there and you'll find a couple of hundred. *L*

judyg, when I said 'go back' in discussions, down at the bottom of the Discussions page, there are page numbers. I went back to page 155, 165, etc and skimmed through them to see which ones had no or just one or two comments. Some that had one or two were only additional photos by the original poster and no one had ever tried to answer their questions.
Oh... and we sent our son up the attic lift. It says no people, but with 2 men playing with it, what do you expect? At 25 they decided he would recover faster than my 51 year old hubby if the thing fell. And yes, I left the room. Males test a mother's limits.
Methinks, judyg has a Tom Brady crush.
judy, I have no illusions about a 49er win on Sunday! They're a good team, a lot better than they were, but they are too inconsistent. I wish you luck, and no, I'm not doing any betting!!! I could never bet against my team!
Who could blame her? Tom Brady is a hubba!!!

Eztia – Thanks for the website on maintaining pavement & pavers; interesting stuff! All the years that I had a plain old macadam driveway, I had no problems with moss or weeds. Now that I have a house where a former owner put in an expensive, fancy paver driveway .. I’ve got to go out & scrub it regularly with soap & water?!

Feeny – If you send an address, I’ll make a moss “smoothie” and send it to you (LOL)

Judyg – Is it me, or are some people too concerned about minutiae? I am reaching a point where I feel like posting, “It’s YOUR room, what colors do YOU like?!” When I bought my house, I knew what basic colors I wanted, but because it’s so “open concept”, I had the paint store color expert over (reasonable fee). We talked about the logical transitions in color between spaces, what blue-green to use to minimize the green backsplash tile in the kitchen, and what light colors I could use to warm up the basement.

Speaking of Creeser’s attic lift, & not trying to camouflage things like that, I’ve never noticed how people handle the pull-down cord for attic stairs! They come with a plain cord that just hangs down, daggling in the hallway (usually), but there’s got to be a more attractive idea? I once thought about putting a large decorative padded ring on the end, that would be comfortable to pull, then put a tie-back (like for curtains) on the wall, to keep the ring out of the way. Any ideas?
astraea, I felt exactly the way you do about minutiae! Enough already! So I just decided to pick and choose more carefully the dilemma's I respond to and I backed out of almost all the kitchen discussions. Too much.
I know that I don't have the same eye for color, as an experienced decorator/color expert .. so I value their judgement. They can explain how one blue or peach is "cool", while another is "warm", and which will go better with colors already there. I honestly think that getting an "online survey" when you don't know people's background, can be more confusing than helpful.
Another day of strange weather; it's not light yet, but the sky is a pinkish gray .. I think that's fog. Ugh .. feels more like London; no wonder I've got moss growing!!
Yep, I agree! And I don't get the part about this beige having a lavendar base, or an orange base, or whatever!
What's that expression? Red sky at night, sailor's delight; red sky in morning, sailor's take warning. Uh oh! Be carefull astraea!
astraea, I've had the same idea about the pull on the attic! You know, if you can't something pre-made, then you could buy a wooden ring and paint it, cover it with a fabric sleeve, bedazzle it if wanted to..*L* Ohhh... another 'something' to look for on my trip to Michael's.

re: dangling cords. We have a friend who, as a hobby, is a glass jewelry maker, and she makes large, decorative glass pendants to clip to the bottoms of fan pulls. We had a beautiful one in our bedroom attached to our old fan (in a pathetic attempt to improve its aesthetics), but now it is all remote control so I'm using the pull as a pendant necklace instead.
I also agree about the color. I try asking on a some of the discussions 'what do YOU like?'. So many people think there is a right way and wrong way to decorate. There ARE guidelines, however, the bottom line is it is YOUR home and decorate to how you want it so that it makes you feel good when you walk in the room. I really understand when people post a photo and say they like their room but there is something 'off' and they can't figure out what it is. A fresh eye can sometimes narrow in on what "it" is. What I don't get is when someone says, I have a living room, what color should I paint it, as if there is only one correct color.
creeser, you're so right !!! I should really post pics of our living room for you all to tear apart. The lack of color in here is driving me nuts. I want to add orange; I want to add peacock; hell, I want to add just about any color!
Post it bobbi! We will get you some color in there!
creeser, do you remember the last time I posted a room on this thread? I don't know if I can go thru that again!!!
Ceiling pulls – When I was seeing someone tall, I figured it must feel like walking into a spider dangling down, so I wanted to get the pull out of the way altogether. I did think of getting a plain wooden “bracelet”; I should check out where the closest Michaels is!

Creeser – Totally agree about people who have a specific problem, or know something’s off .. but not what or how to fix it! I find it kind of a turn-off, when you go to someone’s home & it’s well put-together by a decorator .. but doesn’t reflect the homeowner! I remember when I was in a high-rise condo first time on my own, and went to the unit of one of the Board members. Gorgeous place; definitely by a decorator .. all Chinese. Asked if that was his taste, and his response was “That’s what the decorator recommended”. It must have felt like living in a showroom!

Hi gals, just a quick catchup before I turn in. Tum went really well today thanks, met my cousin for lunch - our other halves are both driving us up the wall so we regularly meet to moan and get it out of our system before we kill them. Would have loved to have boozed it up but was sensible and settled for a lemon squash - talk about OLD AND boring. Had a gorgeous lunch though - lobster, avocado and mango salad. Deeeelish. Did some shopping afterwards and didn't get home till nearly 5pm and I was ready for bed. My get up and go is definitely way ahead of me.

So where are the 49ers and the Pats based?? My impression of the game is a bunch of wimpy guys dressed up in inflatible jumpers (is that to make their butts look smaller?) who run out on a field, toss a ball, send each other flying, stop and talk about it for 5 mins, then toss another ball, knock each other around again and stop for another chat before tossing the ball again, etc, etc. DD tells me a game can go for 5 HOURS!!!!! I would not have that attention span.

Astraea - moss will grow in any low light and/or damp, wet areas, so really the only way you will keep it at bay is with sunlight, which obviously you don't get in winter. Our courtyard is sandstone and the moss loves in in the shady areas - probably the fact that the sandstone is very porous doesn't help because the stone stays damp. In summer the moss goes in the heat. One thing that might be helpful to quickly get rid of it is a gurney. We can get them pretty cheaply here. The water pressure will dislodge the moss readily and doing it once a month would keep it at bay. Bleach can be good for killing it off but I take it you don't want to use anything like that.

Gosh I looked at that discussion on the blue zebra rug. Aja, Natalie and Manion were pretty amazing. The poster said she didn't want jungle but when she showed the furniture she had I immediately thought British Raj/Colonial and was so glad Aja picked it. Loved some of the stuff they came up with but it has made me feel my lounge room is just too plain now. I feel I need something more but not sure what. Gotta find that damned battery charger so I can let you guys loose on it.

    Talk tomorrow. Take care all.

roo, Pats are in New England, near Judy. Niners are SF. I've never seen a game go five hours, although the Denver/Ravens game did go into double overtime, about 3 1/2 hours. The game is actually only 60 minutes, but with penalties, time outs and commercials the avg game lasts 3 hours. And every minute counts, and every minute is wonderful! I live for football season. Hate baseketball and baseball is b-o-r-i-n-g.
Hi all. I laughed reading about dangling cords from the ceiling. Why not put a big rubber tarantula on the end of the string?! Stick it to the wall with Velcro.

I have noticed some of the Design Discussions seem too focused on minutiae. Some ask for information that is easy to obtain if they would only look at Houzz photos first, or even do a quick Internet search. I am responding to very few these days.

Update from my house: The plastic runner with nubs on the bottom is working very well in my hallway.
roo, football is big in this house as hubby played professionally. Baseball is big in this house as F I L played professionally and hubby played in college. Basketball is big in this house as hubby played in college and now referees. Tennis is big in this house.
There are more sneakers in this house than a shoe store (you need at least two or three pair for each sport…oh, I forgot the running…sneakers for that, too. Laughed when you said "wimpy" as some of the linemen are way up in the 200 lb. range and their necks are huge. Super Bowl Sunday is a big deal for a lot of us, but this year, if the Pats meet the 49er's, it will be even more exciting 'cause bobbi wants San Fran to win and I want the Pats to win.
Eztia - That tarantula idea & Velcro are brilliant, but I'm afraid I'd forget & someone would freak out .. like a guest!

judyg - I'm not into sports, but I do walk a lot. My house isn't cluttered at all, but I just have this thing where I'll buy new sneakers .. but keep the old ones "just in case" as an extra pair! It wouldn't be bad if I just kept 1 extra pair .. but as long as they're not falling apart, they just go deeper into the corners of the closet! (LOL)
@astraea. Tee hee. Frame a spiderweb photo from a calendar or a scrapbook paper. Then put the spider on it.
    The other way is sillier.
I suppose one might use a small feathered bird on a twig vignette to hold the end of the cord...
Go Niners! Or the Ravens would be ok, too, Michael Oher and all.....and of course the Pats for judy!
Eztia .. you've given me an idea! If I can find it, I have a little bat that's made out of "brush". It wouldn't make a good pull, but it would probably catch people's attention!
astraea, that would definitely get my attention! I have a mouse just like that! It's part of my Halloween collection.
I just have to figure out where I put it away, because I didn't have anywhere to hang it here. When my aunt was alive & living with me, it hung in the kitchen window .. she loved animals; bats too!
Eztia - that is eerie, when I was shopping yesterday I saw that matting and immediately thought I must ask you how it is going!!! Great it is working.

Judy, I think it is the gear the guys wear that dimishes their size, until they take it off and you get real perspective. I still think they have the cutest butts though.

You certainly have a very male household, mine was all female and very much water sports - cossies and towels draped our house. One DD was a world ranked swimmer and an Aussie National Surf Champ.

Re the ceiling pulls, I have seen that done with a stick that screws into an attachment on the trapdoor so I goes away (generally in a nearby closet) when not needed.
roo, do you think that screw thingy is as fun as a spider, or a bat? hehehe
  • 13 years ago
roo, swimming, in my opinion, takes the most amazing strength, both physically and mentally. Yes, you may be on a team, but your real competition is yourself. DD is a jock!
Weird Bobbi, I did not get an email with your post. With our perverse sense of humour - definitely not.

Judy - competitive swimming is all about the clock. The clock is your worst enemy. We have the Aust Open Tennis on at the moment and Andre Agessi is doing something about the loneliness of a tennis player and says even boxers have someone in their corner. Well swimmers have no one either and in the water they can't even see their competition let alone anyone else. You have no gauge to know how you are swimming until the end of a race. My DD was a distance swimmer, not a sprinter so that was even worse.
