Can you take a photo from floor to ceiling so we can see the whole fireplace?

A woodworker can scribe a mantle for you, however, it's a very labor intensive job to get the fit correct.

I agree with tangal and also suggest you skip the mantle but may I suggest considering adding built ins or ready made cabinets in dark wood for either side of FP? You can actually use stock kitchen cabinets from the depot to achieve this! It will give you your need for a wood fix and a place to display. I think the FP is a great statement piece and should be the star with two supporting actors flanking it!

I think a mantel might add to your fireplace. (I agree, it needs something). Don't do it wrapped around, like the picture, just centre it over the opening. We had a similar situation - they imbedded iron posts into the mortar, then in the side of the wood mantel deep holes were drilled that the posts slide into.
