Thank you! I think I need to run the new wood in the other direction and I'm concerned it will look odd to have the same wood running perpendicular to one another in adjoining rooms. Have you seen something like this before? Also I am not sure how successful I would be at matching the original wood. It is the original from when the house was built in 1955.

I'm having the same dilemma-I want to change my tile floors in the kitchen to wood and am worried about them being able to match them. According to the experts, it shouldn't be a problem. Why do you have to change the direction of the wood, though? It looks like you could run the planks in the same direction in the kitchen as in the living room. It definitely looks like red oak. Why do you think you will need to run the wood in a different direction? Usually the direction is determined by your floor joist. If they sand and refinish your old floor they can usually do a pretty good job of matching it to new floor.

How about wood look tile planks?

If for some reason, you don't change tile which you are planning on -- lightened wood might be fine. And at least it's not totally open concept... there's vertical strips in other room, just as floors have? to me that connects texture with next room's texture.... small thing,

Thanks for all the advice. For those who asked about why I would run the wood in the opposite direction, the living room is longer than it is wide. By running the wood the length of the room it will make the room look larger and bring the eye out to the backyard. That's what I have been told anyhow! Has anyone else heard you run the wood in the longer direction of the room?
In regard to joists, the floor is on a concrete slab, no joists underneath that I am aware of.
I've looked at many tiles for a year or so and finally decided I couldn't choose one because I really wanted wood.

I would run the flooring the same direction throughout the house regardless of whether or not it might make the LR appear bigger. After all, you'll have furniture and probably area rugs too.
