Pruning Half-Dead Japanese Maple?

I have a japanese maple that I planted last year. When I planted it, the tree was stressed from having been potted too long at the nursery. The winter here in the Nashville, Tennessee, area was particularly cold in February, with above normal amounts of ice and snow. I have two other Japanese Maples that came out just fine this Spring. This one, however, seems to be in very poor condition. The majority of the tree appears dead, but there is one centrally located branch that is leafing and appears at least semi-healthy. What is the proper procedure for nursing this tree back to life? Do I need to prune off the dead branches, leave them, fertilize, what? Thanks in advance.
