Minimum temperature fig trees can withstand without damage

I have a fig tree that I planted almost 18 years ago. However, I've noticed that a lot of major branches on it seem to have died, but there is no sign of disease. I don't know what variety it is. I live in Zone 8A, though, and bought it locally. So, I was wondering—what is the minimum temperature that a fig tree can withstand in general before experiencing significant damage? We got down to 8 degrees F. this past winter, and 7 degrees the winter before that. Should such temps cause damage on a mature fig tree? If not, then what would most likely be causing the branches to die?

Thanks for any info.
