Tree root/grass question

We have a row of trees in our back yard that sit at the top of a slope. This is in a rural hilly area in Nebraska. The grass around the trees has been dying so I was going to try and reseed (initially thought grass may have died due to insects); however after digging up the area today I realize it's because the tree roots are so close to the ground that it's probably sucking all the moisture out. It's just solid runs of roots a few inches down. The trees were brought in with a tree spade about 8-10 years ago.

Anyway, is my best bet to provide more moisture or re-landscape somehow to bring in more soil? But even if I provide more moisture, will I ever get grass to grow there? Suggestions?

I'll provide two pictures....first one taken last fall, 2nd one taken today. We do have a sprinkler system although I don't run it as much as I should. Also looks like we have a mole digging through the lawn. I contacted a lawn & landscaping business and he stopped to look a few weeks ago, but he's never called me back.
