Tub or shower?

We just bought a small 1950s home with a teeny tiny bathroom. We want to take out the cast iron tub & put a shower instead. Does this 1) turn off homebuyers 2) then lower the value of our home?

Is there another tub in the home? I think every house should have at least one tub. As a mother with small children, I would NEVER buy a house without a tub. I think it would turn away some buyers and not having a full bath would probably lower the value of the home. If there is another tub, I would say go for it. Are you concerned with resale?

i agree with wildfan, if you don't have another tub in the home do not condem the only one you have!

Times are changing, tubs and land line (phones) are slowly being removed from households all around North America! I'm sure they will never go away, they may even make a comeback...

...but from what i see, hear, and do, i can say many family's are removing the tub.

Thanks for your comments. I only have another small 1/2 bath & just that 1 tub. I figured the same but I just feel like it would make the bathroom look much larger without it.

Family's with small children need a tub. Can you sell your home with no tub? Hopefully, but you just limited your demographics.

We ditched our 1 and only tub in favor of a wonderful shower. The kid argument doesn't work for our house - its too small to be appealing to those with kids. Resell matters but think about who's likely to purchase your home.

You can do lots of changes to the space to give visual space without removing it. Changes depend on budget but I would have fun with the space since its the main bathroom.

If you plan on living in the house for 10 or more years, make it the way you want it. If you don't, then I would not take out the tub. Also, consider that right now you can open the shower curtain and get another 30" of open space. If you put in a shower, it will have a door and you will lose that 30" of open space. If the house has at least 2 bedrooms, it will be considered for a family. Good luck.
