Depends on the actual layout. Just wondering what is in that 1 foot space? I am a kitchen designer....are you able to post a plan?

Mine are within a foot of each other and it never occurred to me that that would be a bad thing.

New appliances are well insulated now. A foot apart is acceptable. The real question you should be asking is what is the best layout for my kitchen? It is necessary to have decent counter space on the side of range and very preferable on side of fridge. May want to consult a kitchen designer before you go ahead.

If the stove is a cooktop and you can properly vent it--then I vote for the island.

A well designed kitchen should have the three main appliances in a triangle: the sink, the stove and the refrigerator. If putting the stove on the island would create that perfect work triangle, then go for it.
The island placement of the stove 'sounds' more ideal in that one foot of space between two major appliances is really not enough for either of them, much less both of them sharing that one foot of space.
Settle on a plan that will allow as much space as possible beside each of those main fixtures..and if they are in the 'triangle' all the more perfect for you!
