How do I resolve this space?

Hi everyone! There's a little less than a month left until my house is complete and we have a problem at stake with the spaces next to our fireplace.

What is something we can do that will make this space aesthetically pleasing yet cost friendly. I am not looking to build shelves or cabinets so I'm trying to come up with a creative solution here! My idea so far is to purchase place some modern display cabinets or bookcases along both sides. The only thing to note here is the space to the left of the fireplace is a lot wider than the space to the right of it. Just something to note.

All suggestions and comments welcomed! Please recommend me furniture pieces if you have any in mind too! Thanks in advance!

Do you have living room furniture now, or starting completely from scratch?

Bide your time, here is a photo showing a plant on one side and something simple on the other. That would certainly work for awhile.

PS: Do love the bookcase you posted. Just remember, glass requires lots of dusting!

I wouldn't rush to purchase anything right now. Live with it for awhile. See what evolves.

Who knows, you may end up wanting a chair with a lamp on one side with a tall plant in the corner and then a bookcase on the other.

Good furniture stores employ folks that can help you down the road also.

Thanks for your suggestion! I'm definitely looking for something to allow the space to be balanced. Possibly building cabinets with shelves but I don't want the space to feel overcrowded as well.

PCMom is right--space can be different on each side. Don't add shelves. Shelves call for stuff and stuff is a busy/cluttered look. Keep it simple as above.

You might consider a 36" tall built-in cabinet with doors for the smaller side that could house dvd and TV components like the bottom of these shelves.

If you like an eclectic look, I could see eventually finding an armoire like this for one side and the tall chair and lamp for the other.

So many ways a room can go! Just depends on your style. Start by writing down the feeling you want this space to give (simple, airy, artsy, cozy, etc.)

Hi Jenn, congrats on the upcoming new home...and PCMom's advice is definitely something to consider. Since you're not looking to necessarily do built in cabinets, the "right" piece(s) is (are) still out there somewhere, waiting for you to find it.

So, just take your time.....and as PCMom suggested, live in the home for a while to figure out what you ultimately will like to place there. We moved into a new home last summer and are still working on even our main areas. What we do regret are the items we purchased early on and prior to us really figuring out what our style was and the "feeling" of each space. It almost sounded cliche when designers asked us what "feeling" we wanted for our space (as PCMom posted above), but only because we didn't understand what that really meant....now we do. You will too once you've lived in your new home for at least a few months.

Btw, I do like this photo in your ideabook....I've saved this one myself. I also do like this as a potential idea for one side of your fireplace. :-)

A pair of etageres or bookcases would suffice until you do built-ins. I would bite the bullet now and have built-ins made now, it is inevitable.

Jenn - Visually I think you will need lower more solid looking cabs. Otherwise its going to look light with the fireplace and tv. Tall mirrors and plants will work too
