Ludwig Spaeth is indeed very dark--also suckers wildly. For a dark, non suckering one, look at 'Yankee Doodle', one of the lilacs bred by Father Fiala.

honest to God ... when i see a lilac i like.. i knock on the door and beg a sucker ...

i have a collection of about 10 types... all but one.. i got from begging ..

dig out a sucker with any root.. put it in a pot with some media.. put it in full shade.. and water it once in a blue moon.. and by fall.. it will probably have rooted out the bottom of the pot.. plant where you want it ... 6 to 8 inch piece the best to try ...
