Yellow chair... Stay or go

In attempt to get more seating in my living room, I bought this yellow chair. First of all, does the color work in the room? And secondly, I'm not sure where to put it. My living room opens up in my entry which is really wide. It feels a little lonely/weird there. What do you think?

I like the chair. Would you be willing to paint your coffee table? I think The room would work together better if you painted it. I suggest choosing one of the colors in your pillows.

I like it and how you have the room set up. Have you considered extending the window treatment feel over to balance room. I think that would really make the room more comfortabke. Also add a small table ne t to chair

Like the chair a lot....fits in perfectly with the style and scale/size of your sectional. Also like where you placed it in the room.

I think it is a keeper. Needs a table and I agree about changing the color of the coffee table the white is too bright .

The coffee table needs to go, the style doesn't work with the sectional or yellow chair

I think the issues are the tv and the coffee table. A more modern coffee table or an ottoman would be better than the sort of french provincial table. IKEA or Craig's list would get you one for cheap. TV console would be better. Tv looks too high. Again, ikea can be your friend here. I love the sofa, chair and rug. Scoot that chair completely onto rug to make it cozier. What's the curtain situation?

I say keep the chair but maybe you could somehow stain or paint the legs to match and keep them cohesive? Love the yellow pop of color though :)

Chair is nice, but the coffee table doesn't work with the rest of your furniture. Also, can you maybe get a double the width of your window/doors curtains?

Love the chair! I agree with others that the coffee table is the wrong style for room and the TV looks too high.

Love the chair, especially since its light enough to pick up and move if the sitter wants to view the TV screen. Agree with the coffee table. You may want a more substantial rod for your curtains. Its sagging.

I like the chair. I would get a few pillows to tie the two pieces together (e.g. http://img5.visualizeus.com/thumbs/b7/e3/pillows-b7e32b3b2d8bd6144c59c290041d635a_h.jpg).
The coffee table is nice but just does not go with your furniture. You may want to opt for a large ottoman instead (e.g. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/6d/23/ec/6d23ec46b989ee66854067567b1f8f1d.jpg)

as a side note, your TV is looking very lonely on the wall and the visible wires could easily hide under an electric fireplace that the TV could sit or be positioned above ;)
    (e.g. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/58/2f/78/582f78c5b784e6c9d33cdfa5e9cdbb09.jpg)

I really like all the ideas suggested by J ANDERSON DESIGN especially the reading table on the floor. I would add curtains and change the table like other houzzers mentioned. I suggest the curtain has some yellow color like your chair. I would remove the book case. I see a reading floor lamp in a style like:

EDIT: I also would add a side table beside the sofa with a table lamp. Something that complements the floor lamp.

    Yellow chair good

    White coffee table not good

TV hanging 10 feet in the air not good. How's you neck?

Get a console and do this.

Great start. The coffee table is the odd man out :)

Love yellow (chair) and charcoal (sofa?) together always. Coffee table is such high contrast that it draws your eye more than I like so, that needs "tweeking". Chair is cool. In general I like negative space of TV wall. I do not see why every corner of a room's space needs to hold an object? Its just not right and Americans need to get on the right track with learning a NEW awareness and appreciation for empty (negative space) as well as filled space.

Negative space allows the GOOD items to really be seen and appreciated. You honor yourself and your good purchases by not crowding the GOOD PURCHASES!

That being said, and off my chest, I do get what you are saying about "lonely" chair when you look at TV wall. However, first get rest of the room in balance. I agree with Mark's "visual sketch" that book corner next to sofa looks much better visually cleaned up.

To Mark, a wonderful (sculptural and dramatic? ) floor lamp would work in the corner where books were. I love books so much, so I wonder if you could find another "thought-out-home" for books? Maybe there is a mid-century magazine / book table from a local seller that would coordinate to legs of yellow chair and look good with yellow chair? I'll see what I can see in my area....we have some awesome Mid-century furniture sellers here in Phoenix. Good job to date! Thank you so much for sharing! I have enjoyed this post.

Though you did not specifically bring up tables, it does seem connected to YELLOW CHAIR question. I think when "retro" or "Mid Century Modern" is happening in a space that it sometimes takes extra time and tweeking to get an "old / new" blend right. So, wrestling with your purchases is somewhat normal in this design category since purchases are often from locale MCM resellers, good thrifts and family members. But, that is half the fun!

Here is "concept board" with some table ideas for you. Thanks for fun question.

@Siegler, you always give good advice and examples .... Love the concept board and suggestions on tweaking to get the right balance of old and new....you're absolutely right.

Really like Mark's rendering too with the Noguchi table and the lamp Suzanne M shows in her post. Agree that the current coffee table needs to be replaced plus other accents added as budget allows....this will all come together in time. You've got a great base of upholstered pieces to work with!

Love the chair, but I agree the coffee table doesn't go with the rest of the furniture. Something with clean lines, either vintage MCM (like the chair) or reminiscent of that style which I'd also look for in a long dresser/credenza for under the TV too. You could then remove the little book case and store the DVDs in the cabinet and find, again, MCM end tables and lamps for the ends of the sofa. I also love the tripod floor lamp shown above for beside your chair. Add some yellow printed drapery panels, lower the TV and your set.

Love the chair. Maybe shop other rooms in your house for a small table...if you can't find something maybe just move the bookcase over to tuck behind the chair and put a cool industrial reading lamp on it? Save your money for a new coffee table. And lower the tv by about 18" since the couch is too close for that height.
Thanks to all for your advice. I know this room needs a lot of work, but I was just asking specifically about the chair. The coffee table doesn't look as bright when in natural light and matches my white cabinets. It was thrifted and repainted years ago. I do want to change it out when we have the money. Also, our curtain rod broke, so yes. I know they are sagging. And eventually I am going to do built ins along the TV wall for storage. But thanks for all your advice on that.

I like the idea of a lamp or small table next to the chair. Thanks for your ideas on how to make it not so lonely.

Jalene, meant to ask you previously....really do like the colors and look of your sectional, pillows and rug...would you mind sharing the source(s) for those? Also where you purchased the fabulous chair?

Thanks Avery! The couch is from Ikea. The pillows are from Look Here Jane (etsy shop). I actually photograph her pillows for her. They are beautiful and she is amazing! And the rug is from West Elm. I wanted a different rug originally but couldn't get overstock to ever get my order right before it went out of stock. It's fine though. And the chair is from urban outfitters. :)

Thank you Jalene! I really appreciate you sharing that info.....I'm really interested in checking out that Etsy shop now....to check out your friend's work as well as yours! ;-)

And sometimes it's hard to tell quality by shopping via the internet, so thank you for your feedback on the pillows too.

Btw, I was just looking at this Houzz project again last night that shows "your" fabulous chair! It dawned on me it was the same one after you replied with the source info.

Hope that you continue to share the progress of this space....again, you've done a great job so far. :-)

I love this latest view of your home. Would love to see the dining table and chairs better too. I love your style, which is why I mentioned the coffee table, because it didn't seem to match the rest. I really thought your new yellow chair was vintage. I wish I had a place for one in our home. I love it!

I love the chair, but I would definitely agree with the other comments that you need to find a way to tie it into the room better. I don't think the curtains really add much to the room right now, so I would suggest changing them out for a different style that ties into the yellow and adds some more drama!
