It was a wickedly cold winter in many parts of the middle and upper south. Sounds like the crapes in your area suffered from some record low temperatures.

I noticed the same thing while visiting my sister in florence, al last weekend. these are old trees but had been improperly pruned two summers ago. of the row of 6, two appeared dead from a distance. there was some scattered new growth but the damage was pretty severe. the other 4 appeared affected. they are all the same color, that watermelon pink that has been around for years.
