Slate tiles and the pros and cons

I'm thinking of using slate tiles in my laundry room, I know they are porous and can stain, but I'm worried about them absorbing smells as I will have the kitty litter in there too. Does anyone have any thoughts or comments? Thanks very much!

I don't know that much about slate tile but I am afraid that it may obsorbe smells and I think a light color would stain I went for marble floor it's cold but durable I think for a proper answer I would call a tile rep.
    Sorry couldn't help anymore

thanks for the thoughts Debra! I have yet to consult a tile rep, but am getting closer to the stage where I will need to!
Keerthi I haven't got any more info, unfortunately no one on this site made any comments and I haven't looked into it any further outside of here yet.
Will post what I find out though :)

I googled pro and con on slate floor they all suggest using travertine instead from what I understand slate can and will chip not to mention stain and cold

Spoke to a tile guy yesterday about slate, as much as he likes it he would not recommend using it in the laundry room. He recommended a porcelain tile that is finished to look like slate. I looked at a lot of samples with him including travertine. As nice as the travertine is, it's not really the direction I'm wanting to go. I was wanting to do a black slate (that looks dark gray) Have a lot of samples to look through in different lights, will post pics if you are interested...

I have slate in both my laundry , mud room and powder room. It looks great, wears well and has never chipped. You should definitely seal it with an impregnator which should not change the color or sheen but prevents anything from soaking in. I'll look for some pictures for you. Sometimes the slate goes under the name montauk black, it's a dark charcoal color.

Here's a picture, I wanted a slightly more traditional look so I had it laid on the diagonal and used a lighter grey grout to show off the pattern. It would look more modern if it was laid in straight rows or offset in a running bond pattern with a darker grey grout. Always seal grout after tile job is done. Also, make sure your installer seals tile for you before he grouts.

thanks mforr! Looks great and is exactly what I'm wanting! Do you not find that it scratches easily though? I'm worried about grit/kitty litter scratching the surface. I was told that there are different qualities of slate but they do all scratch, some worse than others. How do you find it wears in the mudroom?

I have had that floor for eight years and kids, animals, husband and countless workmen have gone over it and its fine. Just make sure it's sealed well

love it! I've gone with my gut for a lot of things in this house and I'm really pleased with how it's turning out! Kitchen cabinets went in today, the cabinets will probably go in this room in the next few weeks, will post progressive pics :)
