POLL: Which size area rug is best?

When deciding on an area rug for a space, do you go for a smaller one just under the table, or one for your couches to rest on as well?

Where's the other button? lol. For me it depends on a bunch of things. The style of the room, what you're trying to achieve, the shape of the rug, how the furniture is arranged, how large the room is. For me, nothing is ever one size fits all.

I agree with PlushRugs. The big rug helps to delimit the space.

You always want to ground the furniture, by putting at least the front legs of the sofas on the rug. Also by going larger the space will feel much bigger which now the space feels very small. 8x10 or 9x12 in this room.

There are situations where a smaller rug would be appropriate - great floors as in the photo, certain spatial relationships with furniture, a rug to-die-for that you just-gotta-have but doesn't come in a larger size.

I don't like to have rugs under my couch or my bed for the following reason: I have a couple of cats and big dogs who shed a lot, even with grooming. So it is a lot easier to run a mop under the couch to get the flying fur, than having to move the couch to sweep under it. Likewise for my bedroom. I have a small handmade rug beside my bed that I just shake out. Mopping with a wide mop makes quick work out of cleaning under beds and couches. I took out all the wall to wall carpeting when I moved in here, and put down laminate flooring. I love the look, and it is so much easier to clean, and I know it is clean, unlike when you have carpeting everywhere.

I agree with inkwitch. Sometimes, a smaller size rug may benefit the room more....

In most situations a larger rug-one that is anchored by the front legs of a couch is nice, but there are some spaces where a rug is used simply as an "accent" piece and you may not want to cover a large area or your beautiful floors but simply make a strong statement...like with a piece of art. Also, when layering over a natural fiber rug, (as in the last picture) a smaller and irregular shaped rug can add a nice touch to a space. No room can be treated the same.

With that said, I think the rug in the pictures is a little too big, though I cannot see the entire room. I would put the rug closer to both couches as well.

Why get a rug in the table basically covers it
