Ant Control --- Anything Effective?

My zone 7 lawn has lots of tiny ant hills (they are tiny unless left unattended, can grow to a saucer. Ants themselves are tiny). I've tried a Spectracide and a Bayer product that both advertised "season long control." Neither of these products, applied to the lawn according to the labels, seems to have bothered the ants at all. Last year, I took to applying the Bayer product locally whenever I spotted a hill. Drop a few pellets, water in, etc. That hill would disappear: a new group would soon appear within a foot or two.

Is there anything effective in treating this problem either seasonally or permanently?
