I really don't like microwaves over the range. Not for me. I don't microwave anything. However, I did look at a lovely town home and this was the one of the few things I really disliked. The kitchen seems about 5 years old so it would we be wasteful to re-do it. It is also quite lovely. How big of a deal is it to remove the microwave? What kind of range hood could go in place of the microwave? I really like those hoods that look like mantles!

It should be a very easy project. I believe most under-cabinet vent-hoods should fit right in without any big adjustments. Of course, you will want to make sure the new one can use the same exhaust duct.

I'm unsure of what kind of hood looks like a mantel. Picture?

In a townhome, make sure the vent of the MW is actually a VENTED one, and not a recirculating one. If recirculating, then you won't be able to have a true vent hood (only a recirculating hood). Otherwise, they are typically the same width as a hood.

A 5K range top with a 5K cabinet hood with 3K blower over it that requires 5K in makeup air?
