Japanese Stilt grass is a non native, invasive, annual plant that grows from seed much earlier than crabgrass. Since it is fairly shallow rooted hand pulling of plants and good mulches are two easy means of control.

Planting beds should not be so wide that the gardener is required to walk on the soil to do necessary work.

Just keep pulling and don't let them go to seed. I had it everywhere a couple of years ago, and several afternoons of work, spread out over a couple of seasons, got rid of it. The stilt grass comes right up, unlike some other weeds, so it's just a question of pulling, not digging. And if you have to step on a couple of plants, well, so be it - most of us have been there before.

Thank you all so much! The hill is thickly planted to control erosion so I can't really start over. I was afraid the answer was pulling it. So far that's what I've been trying to do...but the hill is big (read days of pulling, not hours) so I was hoping for an easier idea! Maybe I'll hire the grandkids. :-)
