Appliances

We are in the plan/design stage of a new construction. We find ourselves balancing ultimate dream home and our budget. Looking for suggestions for range, hood, dishwasher, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, garbage disposer, washer, dryer options. Unable to determine if the prices that are associated with luxury brands such as Wolf, Viking are appropriate. We do a lot of stove top cooking, will need ovens, but mostly for warming, not a big baking need. Would like to consider side/side columns for refrigerator/freezer options, any input is welcome. In addition, we are in the Northeast and have well water, any water softener, purifier suggestions are also welcome.

Are we supposed to guess the budget for your appliances? Throwing out suggestions for the unknown is not really productive.

Spend the money on appliances that will make a difference in your lifestyle. If you don't use your ovens for much more than warming, then it would be a waste to get a high priced brand such as Wolf or Viking. While the Wolf ovens are truly amazing and cook so much better than any other oven I have ever used, I don't think you'd notice the advantage if the oven is just warming food. So save your money on that one. If you do a lot of stove top cooking, you'll find a big benefit from induction--incredibly fast and responsive. For those items that are out of budget for now, consider getting a budget-friendly appliance now and upgrading later. The main problem there is that the replacement appliance may not fit in the space allotted for it, so it would be great to build in some flexibility in your design.

I "2nd" the induction suggestion. If you do a lot of stove top cooking, as we do, you just can't beat it. Extremely fast, easily the most controllable source of heat made today, all the way from way hotter than any gas burner all the way down to keep warm at 90F, (at least on my Electrolux induction cooktop), and changes in temperature settings happen "Immediately". Couple that with the east of cleaning, or no cleaning at all if you cover the cooktop with paper towels first, (don't do this and leave the cooktop unattended, or do it for Woking or other really high temp cooking)! but even if you don't use paper towels, cleanup is still a "breeze", almost a "Non-event".

As far as ovens go, even if you are a "serious baker", you do not have to buy a top of the line or "High end" oven as they are often called. One poster here has both a wolf oven and an Electrolux oven, and they post that both ovens bake great. I've had an Electrolux oven since 2006, completely trouble free, bakes great, and temps are "spot on".

I also do agree with the Miele dishwasher suggestion. We've had one since 2006 and it too has been trouble free, is quiet, and cleans well, and we love that cutlery tray on top.

We have a 48" Jenn-air built in and paneled fridge, it has had one service call since 2006, about $300, so no complaints about that either, but had the columns been available back in 2006, I may have considered them alto I don't like the idea of running 2 compressors when one will do. (we have a greedy electric company here in S Calif)!

We do love the panels on the DW and the fridge, as we had stainless steel before and whatta PITA they were to keep looking nice. As we are in our 70's now, we really appreciate the lack of any effort needed to be put forth to keep the panels looking nice.

Good luck with your pending decisions!

Thank you for the insight. In reference to the budget, while I can shell out 10K for a refrigerator, the question is do I need to, and what do I compromise by spending less. So, yes, Wolf type of prices are in the range, but trying to get suggestions as to what makes most economical sense without loosing much on quality.

I think that Bluestar or the Capital Culinarian might fit your bill better than a Wolf due to your statement about doing more stove top cooking than oven baking, and also save you money. IMO you will find open burners a better experience.

If I was to do a kitchen my priorities would be in order.

Range, Hood, Dishwasher, Washer / Dryer, Refrigerator / Freezer, Microwave, Garbage Disposal. Just my thoughts......
