Help with Kitchen Lighting Plans

Good Morning,

I am looking for advice on lighting my kitchen. We currently have a sconce above the sink and a ceiling fan centered on the sink and 64" from the wall. There is also a pendant above the kitchen table centered on the bay window, 48' in. We have 7'6" ceiling height.

I want to rethink everything.

1. The sconce must go. It knocks into the cabinet door if it is not perfectly aligned. It also serves no useful function. I will use the wiring for the sconce to run LED tape lights under the cabinets.

2. The Ceiling fan will be replaced with a ceiling hugging model with no lights. I like the fan as it helps keep the kitchen cool when lots of cooking is happening.

3. The pendant stays. No issues here.

4. I want to add recessed lights to the room. Based on my research, four 6" lights 3' from each corner should be sufficient. I might bring them closer to the center, but I do not want them above the fan blades.

Please let me know your thoughts. A rough, not to scale sketch of the kitchen is below.

No expert here, but I would say those recessed lights should be just in from the counters edge. Thinking where you have them when you stand in front of the counters you will cast a shadow across where you are working.

Ditto what Maine said above. Are you sure you want 6 inch cans? Would you consider 4 inch instead?

    Oh, one more:

Please be sure to also consider fan total diameter / reach of the blades in relation to placement of any recessed. If too close together you'll get a 'strobing' effect as the fan rotates within the proximity of the light beam spread.

Yet another reason to consider working with a lighting professional - local to you, or here on houzz.

Under cabinet task lighting. Yes! That was not listed but has been done. We installed HitLights Lumina 20 LED strip lights with a 4k colour temperature. It gives a ton of even light to the counters.

6" recessed were chosen over 4" for cost reasons. 6" IC retrofit cans are cheap, 4", not so much.

Additional considerations before deciding final layout and fixture choices:

Where are the upper cabinets? That could also impact locations of the recessed.

The upper cabinets are in the boxed areas along the perimeter.

What is the intended function of the recessed? Is is general ambient light to fill the space, or task lighting, or does it serve both needs?

The recessed lights are for ambient light, but are also conveniently located above the main food prep area by the cooktop, in front of the stove, near the fridge and back door, and above the secondary storage and work area.

Its nice to get light coming from both sides when working at the sink or stovetop, light coming over both shoulders to minimize/eliminate any shadows.

What is the 5'-8" space at lower left corner of your plan? Function will help determine lighting needs at that location.

The 5'8" area on the lower right corner is an additional countertop area that is mostly used for storage.

What are the materials and finishes of the room? Light or dark surfaces? Materials with high reflectivity or light-absorbing?

The cabinets are natural cherry with some off white cabinets in the 5'8" area. The countertops are a neutral grey quartz (Caesarstone Shitake) and cherry butcher bock in the 5'8" area. The floors are Marmoleum Striato layered rock. Walls will be painted white or off white. Lots of neutrals and Earth tones.

What is above the ceiling? Is it insulated space or not? What depth in the ceiling cavity?

There is insulated attic space above the kitchen.

Have you considered dedicated LED vs. standard recessed?

Have you considered something like Philips SlimSurface LED?

Surface LEDs like the Philips were considered, but the cost is nearly twice that of a complete recessed light setup. As luck would have it, there was a ceiling joist right above the middle of the sink, so a surface mount LED light from HALO was used. It was a pain to install and may be replaced by the Philips version.

Glad to read the mention of Brilliant! Lighting & Design about the lights around the sink... one to each side so as not to cause shadow... thanks! :D
