Ive been growing basil lately and from what ive seen , when a basil leaf begins to turn brown, it's due to excess/little water or cold temperatures. When I water them way too much, they begin to turn brown and when winter comes in they wither up.

You can trying adding some used coffee grounds to your soil. Smells much better than manure, and it could help correct a nitrogen deficiency.
