I would paint chest first and see how it goes, then the armoire perhaps, I would go with a light turquoise to pick up on your curtains, will certainly look brighter and fresher

Maybe it's just the photo, but I feel the opposite. Paint the armoire, the stain needs to be redone anyway. The chest looks like better wood to me, granted I can't see the whole thing.

Funny, I think the chest looks more in keeping with a collected beachhouse look, and would not touch it. It has patina, old brass edges, is already distressed - from the bit we can see, it appears to be the real deal, and certainly has character. The 'armoire' is a very plain country highboy cupboard. This room will improve with additional texture, so I think keeping the grain apparent on it to be a plus, and would look at a colour wash of taupe or grey to bring it into your new look and add greater dimension to the overall scheme. (The first example has additional colour added to fake a whitewash, ironically :) ).

Note: The wood box at the foot of the bed is no longer there. It was my husband's grandfather's tool box.

Do not paint. The room looks great as is. If you want, you could change the bedding.

The armoire picks up the brown in the curtain, looks great with chest and as others have stated, grounds the room.If you paint it the room will look washed out.

Do you have anything on the other side of the bed and rest of room that we cannot see? And what color would you paint it?

No don't paint. A lot of work and risk for not much return. The armoire is already beautiful as is.

Love, love this room. Don't paint it. It does anchor everything that is light in the room and it pulls the brown from your gorgeous curtains that are the star of this room.

I would remove the plant from the top, place something low and wide on the top, a vintage suitcase or bright storage baskets. You could paint the inside of the armoire your turquoise colour or white. If you feel like a change, look for another bedskirt. I like the white bedspread since you are near the beach.

The brown goes with your curtains and is balanced with the dark curtain rod and sconce. So that looks nice. But painted white would look nice too. It would need to be a soft white like on your comforter. But it may not look great with the curtains. Try draping a white sheet around the armoire and see how it would look.

There's a lovely antique oak dresser on the other side of the bed, and the two wood tones kinda bug me.

I painted a black cabinet and rungs in railing and it made SUCH a difference! I love a coastal, all-white look, but since the armoire ties in well with the brown in the curtains, therein lies my dilemma.

sootsprite - I thought the same thing - drape a sheet over it!

It will probably be a matter of finding the right white, white enough to look white, but off white enough to look good with the curtains.

My go to white is White Down by Benjamin Moore. It's a warm white which is on the walls and goes well with the background in the curtains.

If you decide to go for it, would love to see the results!

That's a nice room! Not sure what my opinion is about painting that. I do also like the way it pulls in the brown in the drapes.

imo, i like it just the way it is. I also love the drapes!

You could always change the knobs on the dresser if you wanted to spruce it up but it looks great the way it is!

There's no right or wrong answer here. Just a matter of personal taste and what you're trying to achieve for the room. If you want to edge it closer to an airy, beachy feel, painting the armoire (preferably a turquoise) will do that. Or white, with turquoise glass knobs. On the other hand, you don't have anything near what I call "brown overload" so painting the armoire is by no means mandatory. Unless it's a family heirloom or very expensive, I don't see the harm in trying paint.

That room looks great to me. The only thing I'd change is the basket with faux greenery.

I'm with several others...either way would be good. The brown does look lovely with your drapes, and does balance out things...BUT if YOU don't like it, you probably never will, so my suggestion if you paint it would be chalk paint....first coat a not-too-deep teal, second coat an old white, then sand edges to distress. Sand some hard enough to let the brown wood show through and some light enough to have the teal show through. Changing out the handles to something less "standard" would be a nice change, too. You have a lovely room.

No to painting ,I love the baskets idea :)

Clearly in the minority here, but I say paint it. The room could use a splash of color. I’d go for the turquoise in the curtain pattern. More coastal and casual.

Paint the walls; don't paint the armoire. A very pale turquoise or white with a hint of turquoise will really liven up the room.

I vote for painting the walls. Keep the wood. It adds character. Maybe change the knobs. How about a pretty tassle hanging from the knob? I got mine here at houzz.

It's been 7 years, maybe she's already made up her mind LOL
