help - cooking on jenn-air griddle

last modified: 11 years ago

So.. we have this wonderful new jenn-air chrome-infused griddle.. and it seems everything we cook sticks to it! Not such that we can't flip things (pancakes, eggs, omelets, bacon, burgers..) but always with something being left behind!

Now it cleans up great, but I was sold this fantasy that nothing would stick and it would be a great cooking experience.

Are we doing something wrong?

Thanks

Same thing for us. We just started using our unit in our new home and everything sticks. Eggs, pancakes, etc. The demos on Youtube would make you believe that nothing sticks. Does anyone have any experience with this griddle?

We have the same problem! Had the Jenn-Air Chrome infused griddle for nearly two years and we've almost given up on using it. Everything sticks. However, I do agree that it cleans and shines with relative ease. The point is we can't use it without making a disastrous mess of what it is we are cooking.... eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage.... they need to produce some real videos on how to use this thing or it is dead on arrival for future sales.

Thanks for the comments. Good to know I'm not alone. Promotional material and sales folks are definitely misleading... As is the warranty support..

    Thanks again

Look at videos of how short order cooks use flattop grills. Same method. Get it good and hot and use oil or butter. You can use a slosh mop, like for barbecue to prime the griddle, or an oil cruet or a squeeze bottle. And for goodness's sake don't try to turn the food before it's ready. It should release easily when it's caramelized.

FWIW, if you want to put something on the griddle to keep from sticking, I've been buying the "organic" version of PAM cooking spray and we no longer have that brown residue on our cooking and bakeware.

The chrome- infused griddle on my 48 inch dual fuel is a waste of money and space. Everything sticks! I now use my old $50 electric griddle which has a larger cooking surface and nothing ever sticks to it. I wish I had read the reviews more carefully before I invested in this range. The control board also failed after only 5 months of use. After waiting a month and a half and 3 service calls, it was finally repaired today. During this wait the ovens were useless.

    Hi Michael,

We’re sorry to hear that you’ve had this experience with the griddle on your Jenn-Air® product. We spoke with Jenn-Air Culinary Training Chef, Ann Nolan, to provide you with some tips and recommendations for using your product that we hope will be helpful to you.

Set the griddle to 375 degrees and heat it to make the pancakes – you want to make sure your griddle is hot enough before you start cooking to help prevent sticking. If you are cooking egg whites, use a little oil on the griddle because the whites will stick because there is no fat in the egg white. Scrambled eggs will not stick because there is fat in the egg yolk. Other proteins like meats and poultry and fish will stick a little and leave some residue, given the nature of their compositional structure. These tips will help make the griddle stick-resistant!

What sets our griddle apart from other brands is that when cleaning our griddle, it will always leave it looking like a mirror. To properly clean your griddle, set it to 300 degrees and heat for 15 minutes. Clean it with 1 cup vinegar/2 parts water. Use a non-scratch pad to clean the griddle. Using vinegar will help remove any residue from cleaning products that may have been used that could be causing the sticking.

    We hope this helps,

    -The Jenn-Air team

Reiterating all the previous comments, particularly the misleading sales-people. I've had the same issue with items sticking- pretty much need to add oil/butter for everything. I've made sure to pre-heat. Blueberry pancakes are a no-no because the berries leak. Works great for homemade tortillas, once again need oil.

@Silvana de Boer, our control board was shot within the first year, even after replacing it (multiple service calls where it seemed that each hadn't communicated with the previous) it still doesn't work properly.

@Jenn-Airr, thanks for the tip about the 2-1 water/vinegar. That helped a great deal except there is still residue at the edges that will not come off no matter how hard I scrub on a 300 degree with the vinegar/water (photo below).

My issue is similar to the person above me with the griddle not coming clean and shiny like a mirror. I am perfectly fine with knowing I need to use oil, which I felt was pretty standard with any griddle (cold rolled steel or any easy clean surface) but the "easy" in clean isn't so easy, at all. I heat to 300 as suggested, use the 1 cup water (we haven't tried the vinegar 2/1 yet) and will, but nothing works to get it clean. It is very discolored. This part is very irritating as we were sold on the easy clean up factor. I would have just purchased the stainless type that gets seasoned and you put a cover on it, had I known. Is there anything else besides the Vinegar/Water idea that we can try, in case that does not work?

I have the same issue about cleaning as well. It does not come clean and shiny like a mirror. I too know that I need to use oil, which is fine, but it is not "easy" to clean. I heat to 300 as suggested, use the 1 cup water (we haven't tried the vinegar 2/1 yet either) and will, but nothing works to get it clean. It is very discolored. We just purchased a 36” range with the chrome infused griddle- I hate it. Hate it. Hate it. Everything sticks to it and it takes a half hour to preheat. Who has time to preheat and clean all the food off of the griddle that sticks to it? ‍♀️

We were severely misled when purchasing this range

    - salesperson told us “nothing sticks” over and over. I’m sick about it because the range was so expensive. I want to put it out on the curb and get a traditional 6 burner and buy a griddle from Walmart. Do not buy this range!! I called Jenn Air and they weren’t helpful at all. Basically said we are stuck with it. No pun intended. The only thing the griddle is good for is checking my makeup bc I’m sure as heck not cooking on it again. On a happier note, I love the gas burners. Just wish I had 6 of them. ‍♀️

Mine cleans up great. I always use a little oil or butter when I cook and I always scrape it before it cools, then wait until it cools completely to finish cleaning it. I’ve used it for multiple types of foods with no issues.

We used ours for the first time yesterday in our new home and are n happy at all with the clean up! Looks 10 Years old after one use! Tried to clean up like the videos show and looks terrible! Have not tried vinegar yet but am going to try next after three times doing it the way we were told! The chicken was great but not worth this hassle because we will have to find something to cover it up if it don’t clean up any better! Very disappointed!

Please read my comment above. This is what my friend who is a Jenn-Air regional manager told me. I had a real mess one time, so I did the water trick and it worked. Mine cleaned up perfect. https://producthelp.jennair.com/Cooking/Cooktops/Cooktop_Cleaning_and_Care/How_to_Clean_a_Chrome_Electric_Griddle

And in the future always use some kind of fat to grill with, that’s the main trick. I use the Pam organic spray (NOT the aerosol) and it cleans up perfect every time. Hope this helps.

We moved into a new home in June..I had to make 6 service calls because our griddle didn't work..The instructions are so vague, so I watched hte UTube videos to see if it even needed seasoning..it'll take 20 min to heat up today to cook on it for the first time 7 months later..I will prob agree, not worth the 10K we paid for the unit..I didn't pick it, as the house was under construction and the builder had already selected appliances..I don't think my big side by side Jenn Air Fridge is worth it either..no freezer space and not deep enough..

Followup..Breakfast was awesome on the griddle-first use, but cleanup..I'll need to work on that.

we just got this new 48’’ range to replace our 20 y.o. Ultraline one that was here when we bought the house. I researched and found good reviews for quality-value. The fact that the conversion kit from natural gas to propane doesn’t come with it (it normally does apparently) was a bit of a pain, the sales rep didn’t know, his whirlpool rep never mentionned it, we had to wait 3 days for the kit to arrive and be installed. my son was very excited to start making pancakes on the griddle this morning and after reading all of tour comments, I was kinda scared to use it. I used butter (I always do), it does take forever to heat up, but once it did, pancakes cooked, no sticking. And to clean, i have a spray bottle with vinegar/water mix to clean already, I just sprayed and swiped with a sponge. Super easy. No mess left. Hopefully, it is as easy with other foods.

I'm beyond annoyed with this griddle! Can't believe how awful everything sticks to it. And who has time to wait 30 minutes for it to heat up and then basically fry my food to get it to cook without sticking???. I hate that it just sits in my kitchen unused as decoration. Makes me so mad we invested in it!

That’s such a good point! You have to use so much fat to cook on it! I would rather have a non stick griddle I can use with little or no oil and butter and put it away after cleaning. We haven’t used the griddle since my first post. Just decoration. Smh

Girls, try the Pam spray, it does the trick! And always do a quick scrape after you take it off the griddle (5 seconds tops) and then wait until it’s completely cool to clean. Also do not use any chemicals on it, but do use a scrubby sponge (I like the Dawn duck sponge).

This is similar to why a steel or cast iron pan is preferred over stainless. Steel or cast iron can become seasoned - enough oil embedded in it that things don't stick... too much. Stainless and chrome cannot really be seasoned.

A good seasoned thermostatic steel griddle should have less sticking problems than chrome infused. For us cleanup is usually just leaving it on until what remains crisps up a bit and then scraping it off with a blade. Takes about 1 minute. Occasionally, after it cools a bit, rub a tiny bit of oil on it.

I have had the Jen aire griddle for just a few weeks now, but I have used it nearly every day and it cleans with ease every time. I simply use the Olive Oil Pam to cook, then pour hot water on the hot grill to clean it off and follow that with 1/2 distilled white vinegar 1/2 water on the hot griddle to get any residue. Once the griddle is cool I wipe it down with a clean cloth. Mirror shine every time.

Can the griddle, which I find useless, be replaced with burners?

I researched a lot about cleaning our griddle before I used it, and I stumbled upon the same instructions that KR shared: https://producthelp.jennair.com/Cooking/Cooktops/Product_Info/Cooktop_Cleaning_and_Care/How_to_Clean_a_Chrome_Electric_Griddle

I purchased a griddle cleaning kit from Amazon --https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DH9B71X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 -- and made a little "kit" that we keep under the sink - a jar that is about a cup for water, my scrubby sponge with handle (from Amazon), a cloth to get damp, and a microfibre cloth. Now clean up is actually fun!

Two things that I would say: It does take a little while to preheat, but I don't find that it takes 15-20 min!! (maybe 5?) Also, I don't wait for it to cool all the way (15-20 min) before wiping with a towel as they suggest. Here is what I do:

    1. Heat to 300-350.

    2. Pour on warm water and wait 2-3 secs.

    3. Scrub with scrubber with handle.

    4. Turn off. Without waiting, wipe with damp towel (use a spatula or the scrubber to push it around if it is too hot.

    5. It is cool enough at this point to wipe with a microfibre cloth and it usually looks great!! Sometimes it will take 2 rounds, but only occasionally.

    My issues are two things:

    1. My griddle is very slanted. The back of it has two little prongs that look like they should be ion a hold down below but the prongs are suspended 2 inches above the holes. Anything liquid like eggs run right down into the drip pan immediately so my eggs or pancakes have foot-long "legs." Every image I see of the griddle shows it being flat, so I am going to call Whirlpool as I think it is the result of fault installation. I am just waiting until we are fully vaccinated before they come into our house.

    2. I have not mastered the art of cooking eggs so they don't stick like crazy. Hoping that getting the griddle flat will help bc then they won't slide down and out of the oil., which also drips all the way down to make think "legs" into the drip pan.

The new ones must be an improvement over some of the issues described above. We have a Jenn air rise 48” with chrome griddle and love it. just wish it was bigger.

heats up super fast (2 min). makes perfect pancakes, burgers, etc. does food stick from time to time? sure but cleaning has always been a 2 minute process. i use a griddle cleaning kit i bought on amazon.
