Need help with wall unit

This is the existing wall unit with added built in for an old Sony Vega TV. How should I clean this up or even it out to put a bigger TV that fits the wall and room? Opposite wall had sliding glass doors and a small wall, so not sure it would work there. I was thinking of painting it grey along with the kitchen cabinets.
