Electric Sub-Panel Location

The only decent place I can decide to put my panel is in the basement, along a wall behind my stairs. Unfortunately, there is not a wall directly above the panel wall I chose, but if I move over another stud bay, I would have a wall going all the way up the house to the attic. The drawback is that I would then be under the stairs. It would probably have plenty of headway, but I don't like being under the stairs to do wiring. Is it common to have a panel in the basement - not on an exterior wall - making it so wires have to jog over before going up into the first floor wall to reach the attic? I think a panel on the exterior wall would be feasible, but then a bunch of wires run through an exterior wall with insulation and wind up in the attic at the tightest area (the knee wall) where as my idea of towards the middle of the house makes things easier besides running wire directly down to the panel.
