You could do the lightest color in the brick. It's hard for me to tell from the photo, but that might be SW Muslin.

HI -- Very cute house ! Benjamin Moore paints has a color that seems to go well with all bricks ----- "ranchwood" CC-500

Great house! Certainly white trim is traditional. But I'd paint the door a bright color, maybe green or yellow? You might want to keep a storm door, depending where you are located.

I can't recommend white or even light cream the brick is busy / dark and light - this gray is just too blue to be the right thing but a mid tone neutral would be wonderful with this variegated brick and not require priming / lots of coats. With a stained door, it sounds like you want more of a cottage feel on this home ..

Try this - ben moore sag harbor gray (not gray at all - sort of olive tan) - great with red brick and wood tones

    http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/sagharborgray

then, if you would take the DIY patience/ time with a small paintbrush (unless you are replacing them - and then I have even more advice) to use the next shade down on all the silver cross bars on the aluminum windows along the front facade. . using providence olive .. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/providenceolive

you would instantly make the windows look custom and the house look like a million bucks .. old aluminum is usually oxidized and pitted so it takes latex paint very well ..

Test this color .. it is historic and proven with this kind of brick -

Thanks, I do like the tan's in color and what a wonderful idea for the windows! might save us some $ for not having to replace.

Eventually you will want to for thermal reasons, but by then you'll have settled on a strategy to make them charming . . trios of single hung windows with single vertical muntins . . perhaps stain the brick that year . . to even things out and give contrast back to the likely white vinyl . .

I would go with a warm grey tone in a lighter shade (kind of a grey beige color similar to other comments going with a tone in the lighter bricks). I'd also add shutters and go black. I think you can do anything with the door - whatever you'd like most to come home to everyday! Best of luck to you and congratulations!

    Throwing ideas out:

Trim in black or a very dark green, known as Charleston Green, which reads as an off-black, would be handsome and give the house some elegant snap, bringing the co0lor of the brickwork into focus.

If you like the brick, that's great, but if you don't want to paint the brick simply because you are afraid you cannot go back again, consider real whitewash. It wears off over time and while doing so, exposes some of the brick, a very handsome solution. One can always add a bit of yellow ocher pigment to the whitewash to warm up the whitewash tone.

Not sure how old the roof is but a new architectural shingle would enhance the look more so than anything else IMHO....

The windows say Tudor and the porch says colonial. I'd change the windows, beef up the porch posts. I'll leave color suggestions to others.

I agree with Dolly Mom. I would like to add much also depends on where you live. I would beef up the post and depending on your style, also the headers. They are arched but could have a more substantial presence by beefing them up with the posts. If you are staining the front door, you could consider doing the same to the headers and posts.

I would be inclined to paint the brick. It would change the whole look of the house and would make it easier to decide on shutter and door colors.

I agree with you, the color now isn't complementary. Whatever you decide, make sure it goes well with the beautiful brick.

I would suggest a light gray beige for the trim, darker gray shutters and add brushed nickel or stainless accents like porch light and door kick plate. I would take the storm door off. We just finished a remodel with very tricky brick color and received lots of help here on Houzz. You can see the before and after exterior shots at the link below.

We used SW Mega Greige for the trim and SW Gauntlet Gray for shutters and door. I found that adding the stainless accent to the door made the silver on the windows look intentional and part of the design.

The 2 pillars are way out of scale, and need to be doubled up in size. Clad them, and get rid of the arches. They date the house. Clad the arches square. Make sure your new windows also have beefy window frames. Thin window frames (like the ones there) make a house look mobile home - like........then pretty much any color taken from the beautiful bricks would look absolutely terrific on the door/trim/gutters/etc.

The lamp post could go also. A beautiful sconce, post box, and big numbers on a board right of the entrance door would be really nice.

The porch does not look wide.....so 3 big pots with plants under the window would make the entrance welcoming.

I like the house a lot. It's the same age and pretty much the same style as my own! I really love brick and am glad to hear you're not planning to paint it. I personally don't like painted brick, and I like your brick a lot. I like the grey color people have suggested.

I also have a rental house that is much like your house. It has those 4 x 4 posts holding up both the front and back porches. Several people have mentioned beefing them up...that would be a very nice update to your house and my rental. Anybody have any websites showing how to do it? Not even sure what I'd Google to find sites.

How deep is your front porch? It would be cute with a porch swing and some flowers in pots if there's enough room. Nice place to sit with a cup of coffee and meet your new neighbors!

I personally don't like the triangle thingies in the windows...I think updating the windows will make a major difference in both appearance and temperature control inside. When we replaced our windows, I was surprised to discover how much quieter it was in the house as well!

I do hope you'll keep us up to date with your fixing up. It'll be fun to see your progress.

Wash those bricks gutters, and trim and windows. Yes those windows paint up nice with latex' Dark colors will cover over the dark existing trim. One of the creamy yellows close to the brick might be good. don't forget the roof color is part of the house. Lastly color is subjective and if you do not like it you probably never will, is that OK? Paint bbrick takes a lot of paint and it has to be worked into

If you can for structural reasons, I'd move one of the porch uprights so you see the whole window. Porch would be divided into 1/4-1/2-1/4. Definitely get new windows. I agree with others that the window triangles look way too Tudor for your house. Lighten up the trim and door and it will look even more beautiful.

Don't paint the brick... jeez it is pretty....i agree when you change the windows get rid of the triangles and move the post to center the window...if you want a storm door but dont need the screen get the whole glass one! we had new windows put on our brick home--they used a beige tan color trim...looks great with our brick. For our front door we just painted it a red that was in one of our bricks. How about plants to lead to the front porch....porch plant box on edge of porch to bring color in.

The color is too blue for the brick. I would go with Sherwin-Williams Porpoise which is much more brown. Urban Bronze (darkest color on the same strip) would look great for your new windows.

    Hello

Excuse the messiness of the drawing - did a quick pencil sketch.

My vision is to go with black for trim. Grey for door and lighter grey almost white for columns. If your budget allows I would get larger columns.

I would replace the porch light and chop down the large shrub on the right.

    I would add landscaping.

When you can get new windows for efficiency.

Christina, I like the yellow body and trim. Maybe a darker yellow on the trim. Maybe a dark contrasting color for the door. Look at the paint stores for color suggestions to see if you like contrasting colors with yellow for the door, if not do the darker yellow, knowing it will show dirt so it should be semigloss on the door.

Put dark yellow under the soffits as light yellow will whiten out and not have as much color (less light under the soffit). Maybe paint the downspout and lamp post reddish or black as a nod to the brick. SW has a black on the yellow or red side and this may be the place for it on the downspouts. That dark brown in the brick may be wonderful for those downspouts and lamp post.

Sorry I don't like the black on the house. but I do like this sag harbor gray color for the trim, I like the idea to remove the x's over the windows, but will have to view it better once we close on the place to see if they can be removed. On the house that has the photos, I like the brown, but not the red so much. I also would like to try to paint the window's. I just wonder how the paint will hold up on the aluminum. I think that beefing up the post sounds good, unsure on to cut off the detail work on the porch or not. I'm not sure about moving the columns on the porch. may be too much work then I want to take on right now, I was thinking about adding rails on the porch too. but that might be a down the road thing. Thank you for all the wonderful ideas, this sure is fun. WE have been told that the best way to remove the shrubs is to cut them to the ground, then kill them out.. then pull out of the ground after a few months. I was thinking about planting some roses under the double windows, yes I do garden, and have pots that will go on the porch and walkways. I will keep you all update and show the after photos, just keep in mind, that this might be fall by the time we get it painted.. since our close date is till almost a month off still. and it could be way too hot to work on the outside.

I think that's the color I will go with, do you think the gutters, and trim boards, , I'm thinking dark brown for the new screen door full view glass I think, ( I also think that the dark brown for the new windows or a gray? ( when we get around to that) we are going to keep the 70s front door, it has a bit of stain glass on it, in a non-see through window, it does need to be re-stained. I might thank about painting it. the porch rails. should I paint it all the same, I also want to do the trim windows and get that old aluminum gone! there is also a garage door, which is not shown, since its on the side of the house. should that also be painted with the sag harbor gray as well? If you think the outside is fun, just wait until you all get to see the inside, it's yee haw country goat roper style, ( at the least kitchen is) I want to paint the cabinets remove the X on the door fronts. leaving the [] , color I think would be nice bright white, and counter tops in soapstone, with a wooden floor.

Thank you KHB, I do think your idea was on track, but I'm just not into so much black, I hope you understand. When we did the home inspection, he said we need to remove the shrubs ( which I agree) but not to replant so close to the house, that it needs one foot in-between the foundation.. BTY- it is not a slab, but crawlspace home. I'm thinking roses bushes on the side with the 2 windows, anyone would thank twice trying to climb over a rose bush!

When you get to the point of planting rose bushes, be sure and check into information about Knock Out roses. I have several of them and they're a MASS of blooms all summer long; are impervious to most rose pests, and according to their website, the only pruning you need to do is take an electric pruner and cut straight across the top of the bush. They come back beautiful every year. I love all their color, the lovely fragrance and their no-fuss demeanor!

Christina, I think you should paint the garage door gray, too. You mentioned brown...I wouldn't mix the gray with brown. Let's see what others think.
