too cold to plant them out....

I did plant 12 in my old portable green house...it has holes in it, which is ok so they get some fresh air...and one zipper is closed with tape..its cozy inside...and they are doing fine..

I have twenty more waiting to go in the ground.....put one in and it is under a row cover..the rest are just waiting under the lights or outside when the sun is warmer...really cold out there, and a frost expected tonight...up here North of Toronto...

just having tomato dreams..

Would love to see a picture of your mini greenhouse, MarthaZucchini.

Linda, I was taking some in and out in 3 gallon containers too, it's not too heavy. (They are all potted up outside now.) Are those your final pots for those plants, or will you pot them up/plant them out?

Definitely, should not plant out if there is frost in the forecast.

I would not recommend planting out if the overnight lows are under 40F. That is without any protection ( like WOW, hoop..).

Also, you need to harden off your plants ( to cold, sun, wind ) gradually, before planting out.

All are hardened off...was really warm for a few days, they are sturdy now ....the one out under a row cover is still loooking good today...Our temp here is 6c..very cold for May..

We're expecting frost tonight and we just had some HAIL!!! Fortunately, I had brought all my plants inside, in preparation for the cold night. I have some plants growing in 3 gallon containers which are easy enough to bring inside when inclement weather strikes.

Hoping to plant out soon. The veggie garden is ready, with a new load of aged cow manure, and some of my seedlings are in flower and have been hardening off for ages....

yup a frost warning here tooll..just went out and covered as much as I could and spread row covers over as much as I could...so hopefully many things will be OK..My gardens are ready too aged cow manure too....good night for all..

Hi Wormgirl,

I grow "compacts" in the 3-gallon containers: Russian Cherry, Pipo, Jagodka and a (not) Early Annie.... They do well in the 3-gallon pots.

Very cool. I want to try some compacts and dwarves next year. I suppose that means you can bring the pots in at the end of the season. Cool!

You could bring them in at the end of the season, but I do it to get a head start at the beginning of the season. These are started in mid-Feb and, last year, we were eating tomatoes in mid-June. By the end of the season they've got diseased leaves and are looking the worse for wear.....

I'm growing dwarfs this year too!

Last night I had to put straw over the plants and tarp them. Earlier in the week I had just put containers and I lost of few tomatoes and had some pepper damage. It's not uncommon for us to get frost in June, so I took a risk this year when it was so nice. Probably wasn't the smartest in retrospect.
