This pic makes my kitchen look a little darker (and fuzzier) than it is. I also have dark wood floors. EAM44 suggested the tile. I don't remember the name, but it's porcelain, and I got it at glasstileoasis.

Phoenix, it would help us to give you suggestions if you post some inspiration images and let us know your budget, but my guess is it's way too early for you to worry about tile. I don't have pictures yet but my kitchen will be similar to this one, with a grey blue glass backsplash tile. we are going for a beachy/retro/modern look. I will be painting out my walls the same colour as backsplash, a milder colour than above. We picked out backsplash early as it played with the blue tones/striation in our dark floor, and helped inform the countertop choice (simple black) and other accessories. I love colour in the kitchen!

Hi eam44, I've looked at hundreds upon hundreds of white kitchen cabinets. And very few of them have non-white backsplashes. So, I guess I was hoping to find some inspiration images through this post.

We are building our home, so we have to pick our options or upgrade to options not provided by the builder. I don't want to spend a lot on tiles b/c we've pretty much upgraded everything else in the kitchen and just want the tiles to accent, but not stand out, so as to not compete against our 90" x 60" walnut island countertop.

So, I'm looking for tiles to add warmth, but not add attention. Oh, but there are so many beautiful tiles at glasstileoasis....

crl, I love Houzz and spend all my time researching there. I have searched with the filters as you have described - either traditional or transitional styling, white cabinets, dark hardwood flooring, one kitchen island, and medium/large size. Not finding enough there surprisingly with these parameters. Maybe I've spent too much time looking....

Hmmm, I see dozens of white cabinet, dark countertop, non-white backsplashes. I wouldn't bother filtering for the island or the flooring since you are focused on the backsplash.

Yes, crl, ayerg73's kitchen - one of my all-time favorites!

Phoenix this is one of my all-time favorite images. It is of Heath Ceramics Argyle layout. I love the color, but that's not what I want you to notice, and it's not going to work in most homes anyway. See how the tile is the same color in matte and glossy finishes, and laid out in an argyle pattern? I think this visual effect is so artistic, really beautiful without being "in your face" busy. Maybe a similar idea will work in your space.

Glass Tile Oasis is a great place to look for tiles, but really do good image searches elsewhere first so you can narrow down what you're looking for. Otherwise you can get good and truly lost. Good luck!

What about a black or dark grey chalkboard backsplash?

I'm planning this the length of the cabinet run that will include the sink. The very flat finish should make a good contrast between the high gloss white cabinets we'll be using. If it gets grimy, it can be repainted quickly (and in the color of the moment). I don't think I'll use it behind the stovetop though, thinking of using a stainless steel sheet there.
