Your favorite kitchen appliances

I'm in the market for new appliances and having a really hard time making a decision. Lots of bad reviews out there about every company. Could you tell me what appliances you use, and what you like and don't like about them? I'm mainly interested in a gas cooktop, double wall ovens, dishwashers and microwave drawers.

Don't think my post is showing on the main page ??

I have had a Bluestar range since 2010. My husband was adamant about gas...and wanted open burner design. I love it! We had a problem with the door hinges this year. We called Costco (seriously impressed with them), and they offered us a full refund. I told them I love my range and just want a repair. They had the manufacturers send out an entirely new door with new hinges.

I'm thrilled with the performance, ease of use and ease of cleaning, and the fact that they stand behind their product makes me love it even more.

Thanks for the info! Didn't even think about looking at Costco - I know their policy is amazing so that should make any decision a little less stressful!

    Anyone else??

We have had Kitchenaid dishwashers for almost 30 years, and love them! Clean well, very quiet, looks great!

We have a Miele dishwasher and love it. It has a pull out tray near the top, which frees up a lot more area on the bottom rack since there is no basket. It does a great job of washing and drying dishes. Very happy with it - going on five years now with no service calls. I have a slide in range so can't help you with double ovens and cooktops, but I will put in a plug for the DCS 48" stove with one very large oven and a smaller one to the side. Extremely versatile and is a real workhorse.

I also love my Kitchenaid dishwasher! Super quiet and really pretty.

I like the very easy to maintain finish on my Frigidaire Gallery double oven, but the self clean feature got so hot, it blew a fuse and needed to be repaired (still under warranty). So, now I clean the inside by hand, which kind of bummed me out.

We recently bought a medium range Whirlpool dishwasher that has been fine. Our stove is also Whirlpool that we've had for over 20 years with no problems that I can recall.

Be sure and read the warranties carefully. I know with grills you're better off buying a name brand like Weber for $500+ that has a 10 year warranty rather than the cheapies you see for $200 at the big box stores that go out within 2 years. A lot of my husband's coworkers have bought the cheapy grills that they end up replacing every other years which is why we went with the Weber that is a very high quality product.

Thanks! Ann, I have read a lot of horror stories with the self clean feature on double ovens! It seems like it's a problem with a lot of manufacturers and a lot of people just avoid it. I saw some ovens have steam clean, not sure if that's any better or safer for the appliance

Kristin - our house had white appliances when we moved in, including a double oven. I later replaced all the appliances with stainless and did a ton of research on appliances when I did. I ended up with a Samsung french door refrigerator (love it), the KitchenAid Dishwasher (really, really love it), and the Frigidaire Gallery double oven and a microwave. I adore the easy clean stainless of Frigidaire Gallery but I used to self clean the old white double oven (can't even remember the brand) all the time. The new stainless Frigidaire blew a fuse the first time I tried self cleaning it. Other than that issue, it's been great and the stainless finish cleans as easily as black or white finishes. The repair guys said double ovens are problematic because they are enclosed in the cabinets, but my old white one was fine to self clean.

Great thanks! Does everything seem to match pretty well even though you mixed and matched brands? I was considering all thermador appliances because they have a promotion where buying the cooktop and double over would give us a free dishwasher. Then I would also buy the microwave drawer. Their cheapest double ovens are 4k but with the free dishwasher it's a pretty good deal considering most double ovens I'm seeing are 3k plus. There's just not a ton of reviews on the thermador appliances, and a few of them are not so good. So confused!! And what the heck is up with the prices of microwave drawers?? INSANE!!

Yes, no problem with different brands looking fine together. I have an above the cooktop microwave and it was super inexpensive so I didn't have sticker shock from microwave drawer prices. I was shocked at double oven prices (but I think mine was under 3K), about the same as a nice refrigerator. My near top of the line KitchenAid dishwasher was surprisingly affordable. I bought all my appliances at Lowes with a big holiday/multiple appliance discount. Most of my choices from my research (Consumer Reports, etc.) were not on display in the store but could be ordered from Lowes inventory. It all turned out well.

I'll have to look into that as well. Maybe we'll stop at Lowe's this weekend and see if they're doing any big sales for Memorial Day or maybe even 4th of July. The only appliance I'm convinced I want "professional" is the gas cooktop - either Wolf or Thermador. I'm not so worried about the other appliances, so saving a little money is always a plus!

Electrolux induction range.......best appliance installed with our new kitchen renovation.
Great! Did you get all Electrolux appliances or just the range?
I recommend you buy the best appliance for your needs, rather than buying all the same brand. A manufacturer may make a great stove, but a not so great dishwasher is the same line. It's perfectly fine to mix brands in your kitchen.

I'm doing a major kitchen remodel at our new house and I got all Thermador as you were considering. It isn't installed yet so I don't know how I will like it. Our current kitchen is all Viking Professional but I wouldn't recommend it at all. So many issues. For resale, I think people prefer all the same brand and look.

Example, the owners before us put in a package that GE promoted. Advantium microwave/convention/vent to indoors combo, stove, fridge and dishwasher. Problem is, to get a good price on the promotion, you don't always get ALL good appliances. The Advantium is a great appliance, but couldn't be vented outside, so we gave it up for a regular counter top microwave, and a fan that is vented to outside. The stove is good quality. The fridge is so-so, but the dishwasher was horrible, noisy, didn't clean well. That is gone, and replaced with a Kitchenaid from Lowes. The fridge is next, the side by side is being replaced with a French door version. We haven't settled on a brand yet. We'll keep the stove until it has to be replaced. The microwave is an LG countertop version that we keep off the counter in its own little cabinet nook.

I know the matching appliances is a dilemma and everyone has their own opinions on it. I don't mind mixing brands but I really do want them to match. I know what you mean about one manufacturer not making the best in every category though. For example, I know Thermador makes a good cooktop and dishwasher, but I'm not positive on their double ovens - not a lot of reviews out there. But once you buy a few appliances from one brand, the incentives are usually there to buy the rest. The appliances we are replacing are GE profile. We never used them so I can't comment on them but I know they're not the cheapest out there.

When I was appliance shopping, there was one appliance that rated really well but had a quite unique look. In that case, I chose the one rated #2 because it seemed to have a much more similar look to my other mixed choices. With three different brands (all stainless), I think they mesh nicely. It is so true that one manufacturer specializes/rates highly in one type of appliance, but then has low reviews for another appliance. I just couldn't ignore that reality and go with the same manufacturer for all choices. It didn't seem logical.

The Thermador range I got is gas with six burners and a griddle. It has 2 ovens, one small and one big. I like having a smaller oven so I don't have to heat a big one all the time. At 5'3" I can't tell you how many times I have burned my arms getting things out of my current upper wall oven. With the new range, no more getting out bubbling lasagna at face level.

Also my current Viking stainless steel appliances are ridiculously hard to keep clean. You can't just wipe the dirty spot; you have to redo the entire thing. It takes me hours to clean the cook-top which has an open system and more than 20 parts. Don't get me started on the disgusting hood. And I'm sick of it. In the new house I'm getting all integrated except the stove which will be closed and easy to clean.

When I got the Thermador appliances I got free stuff too, but I had to pay to upgrade the free stuff to get the features and look I wanted.

So just some things to think about before you decide.

We finished remodeling our kitchen about a month ago and *so far so good* with the appliances.

Thermador double ovens: work as expected. I bake professionally w/these bad boys. (We originally installed the new Wolf M Series Professional double ovens. They performed poorly and had to be returned to the appliance store.)

Bosch refrigerator - French door, bottom freezer: works as expected. It's a counter-depth model so offers less interior space than other models.

Bosch dishwasher: super quiet. Has an express cycle (30 mins) that we use all the time. I love the top cutlery rack. This was a pleasant surprise because I didn't really have an opinion about this feature when we bought it.

Bosch cooktop - 36": works as expected.

Zephyr s/s cooktop hood - chimney style: works as expected.

Purchase your appliances from a local appliance store that services what they sell. Then you can avoid dealing with subpar customer service/repairs from the various appliance manufacturers.

Just found this discussion after commenting on the cabinet discussion. I valued a consistent look in appliances too. When we redid our kitchen I moved from a GE builder package 1989 to all Wolf and SubZero 2012. No comparison. The dishwasher is Asko, handle matches the Wolf E series handles. Everything works perfectly, I couldn't be happier. I chose the Wolf E series wall oven with convection steam oven above. Wolf microwave drawer with Wolf warming drawer below, Wolf 36" gas ranetop 4 burners with griddle and Wolf counter insert steamer installed next to the range top. Refrig is built in with wood panel doors. Wolf/SubZero offer price discounts for multiple appliance purchases. When I purchased mine the breakpoints were 3 appliances and 5 appliances. Wolf/subzero works with you directly to offer the price discount in writing which is good to use at any dealer in your area. You pick the dealer of your choice based on your assessment of installation, service and reputation. The 5 appliance discount which extends to a % discount for additional units beyond five essentially results in a free unit. Don't reject Wolf until you get your price offer from the manufacturer.
