Marble will stain and etch. While some penetrating sealers some well known in the industry will protect against staining, none will prevent acid etching. They do not improve the stones impact resistance. There is a new product in the U.S. recently from Australia. The product, known as Clearstone, absolutely prevents staining and acid etching on marble, travertine and onyx and is guaranteed to do so for 10 years.
