Unique dilemma

I need to remove the carpet on my first floor. It includes a library, dining room, living room, and master bedroom. My foyer and hallway have engineered cherry hardwood. I do not have the money to do all of it. I need to start with the master. My husband has a very rare disease and is disabled. He cannot eat any food and is on IV nutrition for his life support 12 hours a day. Our room is like a hospital room and because of that the carpet is nasty. I would like to put something throughout the house that will be durable and able to be disinfected. Is there anything I could start with that would still be around for years so I can do it in stages? What "wood look" would be durable but not look cheap and fake? I don't want to sabotage resale value. Any help would be appreciated.
