Kitchen garbage cans

last modified: 11 years ago

Exciting topic, eh? DH really wants a larger garbage can. Which means it wouldn't fit in a cabinet. I'm not thrilled about having the can out in the open in the kitchen. We don't have an open end run of cabinet or any other place that would make sense to put it. Anyone seen a garbage can they'd be willing to have out in the kitchen? I've looked at Simple Human's offerings and nothing interested me.

    Trash Can

I don't know how big of a can he wants. I have two of the ones linked on a pull-out. I use one for trash and one for recycling, but I guess you could use both of them for trash which would allow you to keep them hidden away, but allow you to empty the trash less often.

I agree with you that I wouldn't want a big trash can sitting out in my kitchen.

Maybe a little too R2D2 -ish for this old farm house?

We have a small kitchen so no built-in trash. We have the Simplehuman step can in white. Looks and performs great. It is next to our blue Big Chill fridge.

Also have this recycle bin from the Container Store

Our trash and recycling cans are both out in the open, which I greatly dislike; but we don't have a cabinet that is the right size/location to put in a pull-out. I have a Simple Human can, but I'm on the lookout for something else.

I love these (link below), and they have a single that comes in turquoise (!), but I can't justify paying $200 plus shipping from the UK. Amazon and Staples have some from the same company, but not the exact ones I want.

Wow,the colors are awesome. We have a turquoise Big Chill fridge, and I would love the turquoise can. I looked all over for an "attractive" trash can that was not stainless. Many of the commercial ones are just too big.

That one, jlc, is probable the best I've seen. Too small unfortunately. I do wonder about the garbage next to recycles thing. Some "garbage" is bound to slop into the recycle side (at least in our house).

Edit to say I missed that they have a single. Thanks.

We have had many garbage cans over the centuries and the best are designed by Simple Human. Promise!

I have a simple human round SS. We love it because it can be moved around to where the garbage is. Easy to clean. Pedal and lid operate well. Not too big.

We have a rattan basket with a lid. I just put the white plastic trash can liners in it. The " can" was actually meant to be for laundry. It works great and looks fine.

We have a second home where the can is in the pullout bin. I hate it. Invariably sticky, greasy hands are opening it. That means that I must constantly be wiping the handle...white cabinets. Also, the can does not hold much . Any overflows often results in spills along the ledge of the holder. I find it to be a pain.

I have this wicker trash can outside, but after seeing it, both my sister and a friend got it for their kitchens

I know you said you're not impressed with the Simple Human offerings, but we've been very happy with ours. It's solid, works well, sits snugly against an end-run of cabinets. We got the butterfly because of the way the top opens -- it doesn't need to be pulled out from the wall to operate.

we have had a very large brabantia trash can for almost 15 yrs... it has held up very well. I chose a model that latches since I have big dogs and didn't want them nosing through the trash. the little latch has broken a couple of times and the co happily has sent a new one, no cost-- easy fix.

Would two smaller cans in a trash pullout in the cabinets work? More space for trash to satisfy dh and hidden in the cabinets to satisfy you?

I noticed the simple human ones have bags made just for them. Do those of you who use them use their bags or just regular bags?

I have a small SH can and use grocery store bags in it. It's lasted nine years.

I use regular tall kitchen bags in my simple human.

I second jakebedy. We had that can in our apartment kitchen and it was excellent. Still have it but now in the basement. It doesn't take up much space and it holds a ton.

Ok, now I am feeling REALLY out of the now and a little flabbergasted, but I could never, would never pay 100+ for a trash bin. Is it really so bad to have just a normal can with a nice cover on it sitting in a spot that isn't in the way? When does form trump function? I have two cans, one in a cabinet for when I'm cooking and one next to my DH's coffee station. I paid less than 30 for both and they may be old but I keep them clean and they do the job.

One of my pet peeves is seeing a trash can sitting out in a kitchen! Mine is under the sink, and because i'm a fanatic recycler, needs to be taken out only once a week on trash day.

I don't believe in using the garbage disposal in excess for environmental reasons also. Instead I keep any peelings, etc. wrapped in newspaper and put in a plastic grocery bag which I keep in the freezer. It comes out of the plastic bag and goes out into the trash each week. I started this years ago on Thanksgiving because of all the extra 'turkey parts' which got put into the trash and stunk to the high heavens!! I also don't want to attract any 'unwanted garbage', like bugs!

My DH empties our trash every night, no bugs here. We recycle too for the most part, but I have a list of things that are way more important (to us) to worry about how good or bad a can sitting at the side of a cabinet might look. Lol.

We have two SH that sit out against one end of the island. One for trash and the other for recycling. They're in a convenient location for where ever a mess is made and can be operated with a foot pedal, very convenient for messy hands. They easily hold a tall kitchen bag that can be completely filled. I wouldn't want anything bigger than that. Trash languishing in the kitchen is kinda gross.

Thanks everyone. I'll look at SH again. If we "have" to have a trash can in the kitchen I definitely want a foot pedal and I know the SH ones get good reviews. While I'm okay with $100 for a can, the Brabantia is more than I can see paying. The thing about the looks of a trash can is that the kitchen is the main entrance to our house so I don't want it to be just some plastic thing from Walmart (which is what DH would get if I left it up to him).

For years, we used a wooden coffee bin with a hinged lid. Our plastic bin fit in it, along with the box of trash bags, dust pan and paper bags. It was along the lines of a feed bin from a barn. No pics, but it looked nice in multiple homes. .

I know this isn't going to be popular, but I'll throw it out there. For a variety of reasons we actually use a willow hamper - yes, a hamper. I keep the liner in and use a trash bag (obviously). We originally had a white plastic trash can and strongly disliked the lid, the size, and how it looked in general. We had white appliances at the time and I felt the hamper actually blended better overall. We could switch to a stainless can now, and I've looked, but wasn't impressed and I'm still fine with my current set up.

Mine's similar to this. FWIW, it probably doesn't bother me because our actual hampers don't look like this. There are many shapes and styles of woven wood type hampers out there.

I use the regular tall kitchen bags in my SH butterfly can. No need for the special bags. As for the cost of the can, I have to admit I blanched a bit at first. But knowing that the can would be sitting out on the end of a cabinet run, basically IN the dining area (small house), the choice made sense. There isn't a plastic can that offers the same look, quality or functionality.

I wanted the largest I could find, but I didn't want to pay $179 for the SH at BBB. I found almost the same one at Sam's (not SH brand) for $50. Have used it for 5 years and love it. I bought the same one for our office (they're rough on it and we're now on the second one), and for my son's new kitchen a year ago. My mom also just bought it for her kitchen a couple months ago. It's now $60. The pedal works great and it is a soft close by itself. I use 13 gallon kitchen bags and they go on and off easier than any other can I've ever used. Tramontina trash can

I see that SH has plastic food pedal cans. I'd really prefer a (boring) color over SST but not a cheesy, flimsy looking plastic one. Anyone seen these in person? I'll have to make the trip to BBB to see if they have them. What other stores carry SH?

Amazon has a ton of them, plastic and SS

Container Store also carries SH. We also use regular kitchen trash bags.

Since we always have bananas, we tend to take those out right away in a small bag.

We have a step can half round shape in the kitchen:

This fits nicely at the end of the breakfast bar. In our laundry room we have the commercial can on the right in this photo below:

They are both well made and hard working. We are hard on trash cans, DH practically wrestles the kitchen bag out of the can (even tho there is no reason to do so) and the can is undaunted. And undented, lol.
