Hmmm . . . yeah, I don't love that subway tile with those cabinets. Maybe the backsplash would be a good place to add some color? Just adding some color anywhere in this room would probably help make the cream/gray combo work better.

If you want a neutral backsplash, I really like that mosaic tile idea suggested above. Seems a little more in keeping with the style of the cabinets and like it might be more your style than subway tile you've got now.

Maybe consider a backsplash with some slight color variance. Here's an example of a tile that uses glass and stone.

I would put a title background bringing in al the colors, the creams, the white, the grey and if you wanted to introduce another color you could do it here, Soft shades of glass tiles like this suggested above would look great and make it all work together. I like things to make sense. the sample above seems to bring in all the colors, perhaps look for a sample like that that has a bit of white in it. Have you thought of painting the cabinets? Maybe a neutral like SW 6001 Grayish.

Cement tile backsplash with slightly darker grays and yellows on a white-ish background? Or a creamy background to match (or go slightly darker than) the cabs with a gray in the design? Search photos for "cement tile." I think they span styles really well. And you can get the colors custom. I think you would be at $20/sq ft for the tile alone, but you probably need less than 20 sq ft.

Okay. I would leave the back splash. Use a natural wood dining table under the light that looks slightly antique and likewise chairs. Then use a navy blue gingham wallpaper or stencil (The second photo could be done with a stencil.). It will look completely unique and you won't even have to buy wallpaper! It will draw your eye upward to the pop of color and you won't notice the back splash. Add a navy blue tea kettle on the stove and you could even paint the back of your wine rack navy blue if you wanted. Is this too bold for you? I would do it in a heartbeat. It's worth a try. If you do it yourself it will take a weekend and a couple hundred instead of a couple of thousand on a new back splash.

I think it would fit your style more to add the gingham ceiling, teapot and an antique table than it would replace it with another back splash. I like the idea of this table because it fits would the current wordwork enough to pull it off without feeling matchy. It's also rustic rustic which you like. It also matches these white chairs and barstools enough to pull more white into the room other than the counters. Another thought is to paint the inside of the windows cream.

I know this may seem like a scary idea but it has the potential to be amazing.

It also sets the scene to apply your style to the rest of house.

i think you should repaint your cabinets and leave backsplash alone. That color cabinet doesn't really blend well with the granite.
