I think Stone Harbor from Benjamin Moore would look lovely on the top with a solid BM China White bottom and trim. We just used these colors on a similar project and they look great together especially with the darker wood table. I love those chairs! -Kelsey

i agree, if you plan to have a rug, get that. are the curtains staying? if so feed off that, if not, then get the curtains based on the rug. the wainscot might be a bit traditional for the light and table. perhaps removing the molding and chair rail would make a more contemporary feel.

i'd go with one paint color, a shade of white, on the entire bottom half (wall and moulding) and go with a deep rich neutral on the top half. check out benjamin moore's chelsea gray and colors similar to it. i'd love to see you upgrade the light fixture if in the budget too. as for curtains, i'd go with 2 panels per window. keep us updated!!

Thank you I was thinking of Chelsea grey and new curtains, fixture are next on the list.

A rug would dictate your color palette.

Wow Mark thank you. I really like that wall color and rug
  • 11 years ago

Your welcome. Here is the link to the rug. http://www.rugsale.com/rugs/rug/surya-organic-modern/mustard/67512/281431

These are Benjamin Moore paints that match the rug.

oh wow! its awesome! big but awesome. Do you need to keep the leaf in? Have you tried it in the other direction? I would paint the walls for sure. But thats just me. even a creamy white would be nice in here.

Thank you! The furniture is pushed back until I get the old table out. Plenty of room. I like the idea of cream but want dark
  • 11 years ago

Are you going to want a rug in the dining room ? If so then you should pick that out first then the color for the walls.

    No rug for now

do the bottom one shade and the top a lighter shade... dont go too dark it will eat up all the light in the room. have you thought about a new light fixture?

Maybe try painting all the walls Coventry Gray HC-169 by Benjamin Moore and then paint all and only the trim pieces Oxford White or Cloud white.
It will look elegant and and the table and trim will be the accent in the space.
Then maybe look at mounting a large mirror on that wall to reflect light around the space.

Update... In the painting process but the colors I chose Caponata BM and White cloud. We love the deep purple brown undertones. It's dark romantic and changes nicely with lighting. The white is fresh and classic. Now to complete painting and get started on the wall, window decor.

Great drama! What about a new chandy to up the drama quotent?

Yes I'm shopping for a semi flush mount decisions decisions
  • 11 years ago

Very nice color. Why would you want a semi flush mount ? Don't you want the chandelier to drop down further ?

The reason for a semi flush is because I want to be able to do high centerpiece and not have excess chandelier chain. So maybe the cross between the both.

Chandeliers are usually about 30-34 inches from the top of the table so that leaves a lot of space for a centerpiece. It's just that semi flush are usually seen in hallways and bedrooms and entrances with average ceilings. Of course it's your dining room so what ever you feel is right is what you should get.

For dining, you want a centerpiece to be low enough for diners to see each other over the arrangement. If your chandy hangs 36" or lower it will look better and you can still have an adequate centerpiece that won't have to be removed from the table for dinner parties.

who made that light fixture and how big is it.....i would like to look at it, it looks kinda .... the way the shade hangs... if i would have know this is what you like...I might have directed you to crystorama. but also im concerned with scale.

It's 20 inches. I originally wanted a rectangle crystal one but it was not in the budget. We chose this one for now because it was on sale and matches. It will arrive in a few days. Now onto curtains. I was thinking black and white or white.

    who makes it?

can you take a picture of the window wall now that the color and table are in place.

How wide is your table ? It looks small for your table size. It's a nice fixture though.

I LOVE the daring color you choose for your room. Way to make it personal.. It will be tricky to find a rug if you are planning to put one down. Much easier to pick a rug you love and find paint color later, but I admire your fun, edgy decorating. An area rug with grays and some neutral will help anchor the space and pull it all together.

Thank you! The fixture is from OK lighting. We found it on Amazon. The dining table is large about 4 ft wide. The fixture is just something we got to get us by for now until we decide on a larger investment. I could not look at the one that is there while we save! Just bought the big house and realizing how much larger in scale everything needs to be as opposed to our former small house. I need curtain help now

You could have full panels as shown below which would give you a little more formal look ( especially with your chandelier ) or you could go with roman blinds. The roman blinds are more relaxed and would not cover up your wainscotting and rich plum walls.

What color, pattern/no pattern are you thinking about and I could help find them. Click picture to enlarge.

I LOVE the look of panels with the rod all the way across! Thank you! I was thinking white with a subtle black design maybe circles or stripe. I like the grey ones pictured as well. Another idea is a natural linen.

I love the idea of natural linen curtains. If you find any pictures of any you like ( has to be a clear photo ) I can try to photoshop them in the room for you.

Thank you Mark. These are a bunch of ideas.

I did a really quick job rendering these for you, hope this helps you to visualise them better. What do you like best ?

like them all, they all add a different feel and style. I think you should consider if you are going to get a rug, them maybe pick the style you want to go with from there. Linen would look nice with a more neutral, maybe sisal or jute looking rug, but the black and white curtains or purple ones would be better with less organic fibers. So think about that before you choose. The black and white are more formal and dramatic, will look great with your chandelier. I like the linen but not sure about them with your glamorous decor, white could go with either, and surprisingly I like the purple more than I thought I would.

Wow I appreciate you doing this for me! I'm thinking black and white... I will have to see in person. Can't wait to have everything all together.

Your welcome. I put the black and white ones first because they were my favourite. Yes you need to see the actual drapes in your room, your lighting to see what works best.

I like number 2. I like the drama on the table with seasonal decorations/flowers and China. I'm a china hoarder.

There are so many clever ideas above and I would shoot for the one that appeals to you first, it is usually very telling if you like something right away. Don't hesitate to paint the ceiling a shade lighter than the color on the upper part of the wall. White can be very drastic and a soft color that isn't so dramatic can visually raise the ceiling. Also consider using all flat paint. Good luck!

also wait for the light to be installed, so you can see its true shade color.

Ok the chandy is in and I LOVE it. Still searching for centerpiece and window treatments. The sideboard arrives in a couple days. I got a cool antique tea/bar cart for drinks and displays. It's functional and I think it's fantastic! $50 on Craiglist too.

Very Nice, you need something on the walls, and def a larger scale more eye catching center piece, so you are on the right track......I really admire your bold color, its fantastic....
