Bareroot trees should be planted as soon as possible (like right now!). If you live in a warm climate (no significant freezes during the winter), you can just plant the tree directly in the ground. If you live in a colder climate, plant it in a pot and put it in a protected area during the freezes.

Hi Jian Li. This past January I received a dorment bareroot tree. I soaked the roots overnite in water and potted up the next day. Treated it like all my sleeping figs with an occasional splash of water. It budded up and leafed out beautifully this spring. Keep it in a cool spot until your past any frost. In short I wouldn't hold off.
