Need help for island granite

We just updated our kitchen a little by making the island bigger to allow for bar stools. Our contracter originally thought that they would be able to find an exact match for the island to go with the rest of our granite. But, they're having trouble finding an exact match. What color granite will look good with the rest of the kitchen? The granite on the other counters is beige.

We have a temporary wooden piece for the meantime.

How about a leathered or honed black granite? Something totally different, yet will complement the tile accent on your backsplash.

You should have though of the island as the focal point and decided on it first. This is a typical problem with builders who are not designers helping with design. They are not as aesthetic driven as designers.
I am going to recommend something really new. It's called Deckton. It's completely heat resistant. It's by Constantino. Comes in deep black brown colour ways. Hope that helps.

I'm solving a design dilemma a very similar to this in a condo, and this granite is hard to match. I'm using Selex limestone, it's similar to your floor. If you have the budget

Jen- I love the way that butcher blocks look, but don't feel like we can keep up with the maintenance.

Shelley Scales Design Associates - You don't think that will be too dark with the dark cabinets? Also, would you recommend changing the island cabinets to a lighter color then? Perhap white-ish?

Trying to match the granite seems like it would be time-consuming, might not work, and even if it does, all you'll have is an awful lot of matching granite! Instead, consider marble, butcher block, a contrasting granite, other materials...have fun with it!

Thanks! Do you think if I choose something dark, it will look too dark with the cabinets and island base?

A lighter island with a dark granite would look spiffy. But so would your current dark island with a big chunk of something lighter on top.
Putting in a word for the wood countertops, you don't need to maintain them perfectly, they look ok if a little worn.
Hopefully the main takeaway here is that we're all suggesting contrast rather than slavish devotion to a match.
If you really want to go low-maintenance you could consider stainless, but it might not work with your overall style.

I'm waffling on the "too dark" question. I like a little more contrast, but others may feel differently. Best of luck with it!

I would try and find a remnant of granite that will compliment the cabinet colors and existing granite and maybe something that has some movement in it to make a real statement on the island. You can take your measurements to a local granite yard that has remnants for sale. That way you are not buying an entire slab. I would use something light in color with dark veining. for example, something like Golden Bordeaux. http://www.galaxygranite.com/granite/golden-bordeaux

    I hope this helps!
