Should I paint??

I was hoping to keep the table it was my husbands great grandmother s. I don t think he would care though if I ditched it.

Yes, and I do not think you need double mirrors in this space. Maybe neither mirror as it is not reflecting anything but the stair steps??

No, I get why, but it is nice to have a mirror reflect something you want to look at.

Maybe a mirror more like this to break a direct view but still give light and the illusion of more space;)

I like mirrors, but it only reflects the staircase (and you). How about some decals?

I would keep the small table and use it as a bedside stand or a writing desk in another room because it is such a lovely piece of furniture. On the wall under the thermostat (or whatever), you might add a shallow chair rail and bead board wainscoting, painted white. If you like the colors in the patterned rug, you might paint the wall above the bead board and the other walls a variation of the blue-grey color in the rug. When it comes time to do something with the stairs, you might paint the treads of the stairs the same blue-grey and then paint the risers or backs of the steps white. I believe the hall looks quite nice as it is, except for needing some color and contrast.

After looking at your photos again, I would recommend putting bead board wainscoting on all the walls of this hallway and using the blue-grey paint on the upper wall. If you do not have white-painted crown molding, please add it to all of your house. I also would suggest making the hardwood floor several shades lighter -- perhaps natural or one shade darker than natural -- to brighten up the entire house. As I implied before, you have lovely furnishings and just need some color and brightness.

It's a pretty narrow space...I like the crisp white walls and blue carpet. You should resist complicating it.

I like mirrors also, but change it up. put in a piece with a small mirror and a big frame. Since the hallway is long and narrow, put up a round or oval mirror to break up the shape. The table is fine.

I would put up chair railing. and then paint the bottom half a pale bue/grey. Also the fixture on the ceiling, can you get another chandelier that hangs down lower?

Table is nice! Like the idea of a mirror, but if you want drama, I'd get a taller one. :) I'd aim to practically touch whatever that wall-wart is (motion detector?)--as high as you can go! I'd move the motion detector even higher if it's possible. I would not do a round mirror because the space is narrow.

On the lower shelf, add a basket to visually fill the space.

Three objects on the table: Oblong dish, something **colorful** and TALL, and something roundish, like the flowers you already have.

I like the idea of a chair rail. If you keep it at 3' and keep the upper part light and paint the lower section a shade that's little darker, it makes your ceiling feel taller. That helps you get some verticality out of a long and skinny hall.

(Conversely, a 4'-6' chair rail makes your ceiling look lower, and painting the upper part dark with a 3' chair rail makes your ceiling look lower, as well.)

I don t know why I just really can not picture a chair rail in the small hall. It may make it more interesting I just think it is way to small for that but what do I know that's why I am on this site! I have never been a fan of chair rail either so it's something I rather not try at this point .I could do a lower fixture . The motion detector can not be moved and do its job effectively . I assume the same with thermostat or at least that is what my husband will tell me lol.

Looking back at pics I think hall loos much more spacious than it really is. Just measured it at 12 by 3

May I suggest you paint the wall a bright fun color and find a rug/runner with that color in it for additional punch-plus add a colorful vase to the table.

Stacy, the chair railing would add interest to the hall. It is so easy to do. I put up railing in my dining room and what a huge difference it made.. I went to HD and bought a little miter saw with holder, never done it before in my life. Turned out great and was a fun project. Not everyone (or anyone) liked my suggestion of changing out the mirror, but the one you have, in my opinion just plays into a long narrow hall, being high and narrow with no shape. If you don't like a round one try this with a little color

It is blue/grey and would good above the table. With your flowers, a small blue dish and the candle, it will look great. I understand that the mirror does not reflect anything pretty, but once you step into the hall, it only reflects you (that's all anyone will ever see) and it is an eye catcher when you go down the hall.

Susan I do like the idea do an interesting mirror. As I said I love them. The one that is there was never intended to stay it was a filler from another room till I found something. I hate looking at things unfinished even if it isn't what I really want. I am starting to warm to idea of chair rail my husband is very handy so that will not be an issue. Getting him to add it to my list will be! Haha so bottom painted a blue/gray top can stay I think it is dove wing. How wide of a rail do u suggest ?

I actually like round mirrors that is what I pictured there. It's everyone else that says mirror is a no no.

What about wall other mirror is on ? I would like to keep it I painted it the color it is now it was a green. It's van dussen blue by BM. I hated to get rid of it and thought it could work that is why I choose the rug that is there now.

Stacy, you would not have to have a chair rail per se that would jut out too much and make the hall too narrow. To achieve the desired effect, you could get some trim that is 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and two to three inches high with a routed or beveled edge on the upper and lower edges. You could attach this horizontally to the wall at 36 inches from the floor and paint it white. Then, you could paint the wall one color below the trim and another color above as other posters suggested.

Stacy, rule of thumb is 25% of height of ceiling, so if your ceilings are 10' then chair railing should be 30" off floor. Most people have a set height of 36", but depends on ceiling height that can be too high. Experts say better too low than too high. Measure the height of the ceiling. I would look at the picture and mirror and see how high off the floor they are hanging now. Of course you would want the railing below the frames.

Sorry, Stacy, I'm confused..is one of the walls a different color? Is one green?, blue? what color are all the walls in the hall?

I know the lighting is not to good but walls are white all of them. Ceiling is 8 foot.

No trim on other mirror is blue it used to be green and I painted it

Look at creating a vignette on the table - a still life that intrigues and reflects the personality of the people in the house. A photo of great grandmother? A little collection of pin cushions or something else from the period? Three smaller vases and a matching candlestick?

Take that beautiful blue trimmed mirror and hang it over the sofa and move that large middle picture into the hall.

Paint would add drama and elegance to the space. :) A pop of color (flowers) would deter the eye from the stairway reflection...

Never thought about that Susan !! Hmmmm that may work just not sure if it is wide enough. Will measure it in morning!
