Help, RO Gridlock!

I just had a Kinetico s250 installed for $2850. Long overdue to replace a 20 year old cabinet unit. our city water hardness is 20 and the old unit was only softening down to 13. what a difference.

Anyway, my dealer offered me the K5 installed for $1200. Should I pull the trigger? I am not really sure about purification. There seems to be a divergence of opinion on whether removing all of the minerals is an ok thing to do. Lincoln, Nebraska has highly rated water for taste, but the city uses chlorine and chloramine. Put it this way, I don't hate my water, but maybe I don't know what I am missing. I also have a teenager with heart/immune issues, so maybe that is a reason to go RO. Help!
