DON'T go with vinyl siding as it's a petroleum product meaning if your house catches on fire, there will be a lot more damage as the vinyl traps the heat inside the house. The smoke from vinyl siding is also far, far more toxic than ordinary toxic smoke so if you're in or near it, you're much more likely to suffer serious injury including death. And if the fire is outside and gets near your home, the vinyl will melt like other plastics in a matter of minutes. The reason I know this is because my husband is a 30 year career firefighter.

Any earth tone will work. The color looks similar to clay shingles, but I am assuming that they are actually asphalt. If this is correct, then there will be multiple colors mixed in with the primary orange color asphalt, and the color you paint your house will help to pull out similar shades. Meaning, a paint with a yellow undertone will bring out the Orange. Depending on the range of tones in your shingle, you maybe able to pull out the blacks or Browns with tones of brown on the cooler side of the color wheel (less yellow, more blue or gray). I personally like the Orange tone and would replace the siding with stucco in a pale gray or muted yellow, with bright white trim and a dark colored door (dark wood or black). If you are not in to the Southern California look, a medium gray-brown siding, white molding would work. For a more country cabin look, you could add stone veneer around the lower foot and a half or so of the house. Also painting one or both of the siding on the roof peaks a darker shade will add depth and interest. All in all, stick to a earth tone and it will work.

If the bottom of the boards is the only area with rot, could you possibly remove the bottom and add a board & batten trim look to the home? See the horizontal board at the bottom of the wall on the left side of the house wall in this photo.
