I agree, as long as it was rising off your existing stone corners, it would become park of your original design, just ask your original designer, probably a stone mason, & he will concur.

You did not ask for plant material advice, however, here it is. Those two yellow green balls that greet you are too interesting to the eye, so move them from this important gateway location and fill the bed with evergreen groundcovers and bulbs to compliment the other existing planting, and eliminate the view of exposed soil.

@ Cascio Assoc: what color pergola? This is one of the views from the patio, which is only a few steps away from each other. Maybe white would tie the two together, or look to stand outish against the stone? Btw, that's not exposed soil, it's our bark mulch. We just need to add to the landscape!
