I have a new cedar fence that was installed a month ago. I am planning to stain it myself with the Flood CWF UV stain natural/clear but I am getting mixed messages on how to prep it. There is no mildew, but birds have left their marks in places.

On the stain can it says use Flood wood cleaner to prep. Talked to a representative in Flood Customer service this morning and he said that, yes, I needed to use a brightener on the fence, even though the fence is new. I asked about a suggested Flood product for this and the rep says Flood doesn't make it any more but any brightener will work.

Went to lowes, and looked at a limited number of available cleaners. One says do not use on cedar less than ten years old. Others talk about removing severe mold and such and contain bleach.

II don't want to lighten this cedar; it is new and I like the color. I just want the wood to be properly prepped to accept stain. I was considering just using my pressure washer with water, but I have read many horror stories of improperly prepped stain project with us even results.

The wood does absorb water when applied to the surface, which is supposed to be a sign that it is ready for staining.

What cleaning do I need to do? The weather window for staining is closing fast...recommendations?
